Or, I guess it’s motivation to go ahead and put knobbies on my CX commuter for winter…

Any hints on planned route? (And where is this dirt that is referenced?) I want to try to attend, though likely toddler bedtime will conflict. Was thinking I could try to catch up / intercept later depending. I even have the cross tires still mounted from Friday’s commute.

Commuting with knobbies sucks for everything but snow (or dirt) — and poor traction on wet or frozen road. I would say you should buy my wheels to have a spare set to swap on, but unfortunately they are sold. (But a cheap wheelset might be worth it.)

Yeah, not super knobbies… Just picked up some all-around CX tires. I wanted something for snow/mud, and I finally want to do some gravel grinders. I’ll probably do most of my commuting on my Cannondale anyway…

    I’m planning on attending… wondering if I should bring a u-lock. @hozn 67606 wrote:

Agreed. I finally started swapping out my wheelsets on the CX bike for commutes. The commuting set is a lot heavier but I didn’t always feel too confident cornering on my CX/gravel tires (and they’re only a file tread).

I actually just realized that I might be able to use the wheelset from my wife’s old hybrid, which we’ve been debating getting rid of. I hadn’t thought of using those wheels because that bike is a 9spd with disc brakes, but I’m pretty sure I can just throw a 10spd cassette on there and call it good, although I’ll have to see if the rims will work v-brakes…

Oh, nice! Yeah, 9/10s should be same freehub. If the rims don’t work, it could be a good first wheel building project! :) — or probably more practical/cheaper would be those wheels americancyclo linked in the “I saw this deal” thread.

Of course to make the swaps easier you probably want to get an extra cassette too.

If you could put those brifters in “friction”mode, you would have a lot more options(although you might need to swap chains as well).

FYI–there are some goodies from a company called “Rapha” which you may have heard of, that will be supplying some HI-VIZ goodness tonight.

    See you all there…
