ParticipantAlso… welcome to the forum and the area No_Falls, hopefully you’ll get used to our sarcasm sooner than later. Stop by the HH tonight if you can, it’s really close to your home so you should be able to beat the rain… that is of course until Dismal shows up. Safe riding, and see you out there.

Welcome to Arlington! Long time resident of Pentagon City so feel free to shoot me any questions on this forum or via a private message.
There is a forum happy hour tonight at Capital City Brewery in Shirlington (near the start of the W&OD) tonight starting about 5:00ish. It would be a great opportunity to meet lots of people from this forum; if you wish to attend, please send a PM to Arlington Rider or post an affirmative on that thread so another chair can be put out. We’ll be out on the patio.
Ok i will be there. Late reply I know. I also just responded in that thread.

Kelley is also an esteemed name on the forum (Tim, Rockford, and I also recognize Kelly, but just barely).
Ahem.

I’m sorry, we have too many Steves on the board already. You’ll either have to legally change your name, or convince another board Steve to do it.
Name change under consideration:p.

ParticipantWhen I used to watch The McLaughlin Group (the televised political feeding-frenzy show), the host John McLaughlin had a quick if rude solution. There were often different guest commentators on the show. Sometimes one of them had the same first name as one of the regulars. If that happened, McLaughlin would simply start calling one of them STEVE ONE and the other STEVE TWO. Or was it STEVE OTHER and STEVE THE FIRST? He wouldn’t ask if it was OK. He would just barrel ahead and shout out STEVE THE FIRST! or STEVE TWO!
(The names are in caps because McLaughlin tended to shout everything out. I haven’t watched the show in years. It used to be on NBC but I just learned that it is now taped at WUSA, the CBS station in DC, and airs on PBS.)

ParticipantWelcome Steve. This is going to read like a copycat post, but… I’m actually fairly new to this forum as well, I also live near Bob and Ediths and my name, Stephan, could be shortened to Steve, lastly, I also work in the same general neighborhood as you do. However, I have been commuting in to Downtown for several years now from that location, so I might be able to give you some routes.
My favorite route right now is to go in via Fort Meyer and the cemetary (you only need a drivers liscence to get on the base) and you can ride down through the cemetary (provided you come in after 8 am), across the Memorial Bridge and mall to 15th street. I usually come back by way of the mount vernon trail, up washington boulevard, and then up the Pike. You can also reverse that route to come in to the city. The 14th street bridge is also an option, but I personally don’t prefer that one, except in the mornings during the cherry blossoms. You can ride back by Fort Meyer, but not the cemetary.
Feel free to send me a message if you want someone to show you the route some morning.

Participant“First Bruce: Is your name not Bruce?
Michael: No, it’s Steve.
Second Bruce: That’s going to cause a little confusion.
Third Bruce: Mind if we call you ‘Bruce’ to keep it clear? “

BEST COMMUTE IN DC!!! As the regulars know, I used to live by Fort Myer, and my daily commute was basically this. It’s the biggest thing I miss about our first house.
On a map, to DC looks like this, and home looks like this (note that the part in DC is my best guess – there may be a better route). Coming home, you have to be in the gate on Marshall Drive by 6pm, I believe, unless you’re military. You can enter the base with an photo ID, but if it’s not a CAC card, the guards will write down your info.
Another option for both of you is, as kingman762 says, to come back over the Washington Blvd Trail, but I would advise against spending a lot of time on the Pike. Instead, you can use Southgate Road, with parallels the Pike then leads to the base. You can either go down to the Pike for a few blocks (as in this route) or up to through the base (as in this route). You could also take the 14th Street Bridge, then circle around to get on the Washington Blvd Trail (as in this route).

ParticipantIt really is the best commute. The strech through the cemetary is really nice in the morning. Once in DC, I like to go down the reflecting pool and up the 15th street cycletrack on the way in: http://goo.gl/maps/TCYHd. It’s usually not too busy in the morning.
I also agree with Dasgeh, go up southgate road, then you only have to be on columbia pike for a few blocks (from the Sheraton to S. Courthouse).

ParticipantThanks everyone. Those maps especially are helpful. So far I’ve learned to avoid Columbia Pike as much as possible, and I ride through Ft. Myers from the gate near 2nd street to the gate closer to the Sheraton. These are evening after work rides just for enjoyment to get to the MVT and four mile run trails (via Pentagon City to Crystal City). Returning, I like the hill on Walter Reed from the four mile run trail to just past Columbia Pike. (I find it a bit of a stress buster after a day at work). I will try the commute though.
