ParticipantI’m sorry, we have too many Steves on the board already. You’ll either have to legally change your name, or convince another board Steve to do it.

Hi. Steve here. New to this forum and fairly new to this area (I am from NY/NJ). I live in S. Arlington (Columbia Pike, not far from Bob & Edith’s diner.) I’m a somewhat experienced cyclist, having explored the local trails (MVT, Four Mile Run and WOD) and the local roads.
I work in the District (downtown – near K Street & 12th St NW) and while I haven’t tried the bike commute yet, I hope to sometime soon. I have to figure out a good route. I’ll be checking the commuter section of the forum (I think biggest unknown might be what bridge to cross). I am concerned too about having enought “space” on the trails, etc. so might have to avoid rush hours. Yes, I do have head and tail lights, wouldnt leave home without them.
S
Welcome.
I wouldn’t worry about the spacing issue. The volume on the trail on a weekend is a significant multiple of what it is at it’s worst on a weekday. I would say maybe twice a week on my 16 mile ride into work or ride home I have to slow down because of congestion. And definitely check out the other forums and ask for a route request. I suspect you’ll end up on the 14th St Bridge (or whatever it’s actual name is since folks had that discussion on here a year or two ago).
Enjoy!

Welcome to the neighborhood, I also live just off Columbia Pike not far from Bob & Ediths!

I appreciate you looking out.

It’s actually more selfish than that – it’s hard enough keeping people straight as it is (though I suppose if i just start calling all male forum members Steve I’ll do okay).

ParticipantWelcome! As another relative newbie, also commuting from Arlington (N. Arlington in my case, off Lee Highway) I think you will find a commuting route quite easy to set up.
I am partial to the 14th Street Bridge which also allows you to add a few laps of Hains Point if and when you get a chance. An option. While I cannot comment or vouch for the bits in S. Arlington (others with more experience will certainly jump in on that bit) I can tell you that the trail from the Merchant Marine Memorial, across the 14th Street Bridge and into the District is a route I take quite regularly and is A-Ok.

ParticipantWelcome to Arlington! Long time resident of Pentagon City so feel free to shoot me any questions on this forum or via a private message.
There is a forum happy hour tonight at Capital City Brewery in Shirlington (near the start of the W&OD) tonight starting about 5:00ish. It would be a great opportunity to meet lots of people from this forum; if you wish to attend, please send a PM to Arlington Rider or post an affirmative on that thread so another chair can be put out. We’ll be out on the patio.

Welcome to the forum! Newcomers and forum lurkers are always welcome at Third Thursday happy hours (as well as any of the coffee clubs), and they’re a great chance to meet many of the forum regulars and make new friends. Details about the happy hour today are in a thread under “Events”.
As Kathy mentioned, a heads up that you’re coming is much appreciated so we can have enough seating. We have nametags to help you get acquainted, and if I know that you’re coming, I can usually bring some area bike maps and maybe some welcoming swag.

I’m also on the Pike, near where it intersects with the WOD. I’ve never been to any of the happy hours…room for one more?

ParticipantJrenaut, maybe you should change YOUR name. Pete, Shawn, Chris, and Steve are the only acceptable male names in the forum. All the ladies must be named Kathy or Liz.

Kelley is also an esteemed name on the forum (Tim, Rockford, and I also recognize Kelly, but just barely).
