I realize this may seem a bit fishy given that it was my first post, but I assure you it’s very real. The link leads to a survey that we created using Google Forms.

There wasn’t anyway to say this in the survey, but in case the survey guy comes back here: I’d only use the lockers if they could accomodate a cargo bike.

I’m skeptical that the economics can work here – these storage lockers will be taking up prime real estate, and I just can’t see many people paying that much for them. But I’d love to be wrong.

I was unable to complete the survey, as I no longer commute to work, so I don’t know if pricing or location was discussed in the survey.

I used to work in Pentagon City commuting by bike and used the bike lockers located in front of the entrance to the Pentagon City Metro (until they were removed). For seven years, I paid WMATA $70/year for the locker. I didn’t have to remove any equipment from my bike, it was dry and most importantly safe from theft. When the price for the locker was raised to $200/year, I thought about dropping the rental, but the convenience of leaving my equipment on my bike, having it dry and safe still made the price tolerable for me.

They asked what you’d be willing to pay per hour and for a monthly subscription.

There’s also a difference between a rental for daily use vs a rental for occasional use. There are plenty of places I would be happy to bike but don’t want to leave my bike for any long period of time, but I don’t go to any of them on a daily basis. If I could park at any location in the city for $200/year, that would probably be worth it, but I can’t see that being enough to pay for the costs of the lockers.

There is definitely a market for secure, dry bike parking downtown. And based upon the eight bikes that have been sitting in the locked cage in the garage at work for upwards of a year, the ideal price point is $0.
