The low point was getting a wheel caught in the bike traps on 9th St near Mt Vernon Square and falling. Nothing serious – embarrassment and a sweet bruise on my leg – but it wasn’t any fun. The high point was probably the first time I took the long way in to the office and, while riding past the water on Hains Point, I realized that I had just doubled the length of my commute, on purpose, and was really enjoying it.
I’m not sure how many miles I’ve done. On a normal day, it’s about 7 miles round trip. On Tuesdays when I do our CSA pickup, it’s 10. On days I can do the long way one or both directions, it’s 10-14 miles. I miss less than one day a week. So, however many miles that is. Nowhere near the miles that many of you do, but way more than I did the year before (zero).
I’m definitely in better shape – I had been running before the kids were born, and my last 10K I did in just under an 8 minute pace (like 7:58, but still), and then I had foot surgery, and then kid #1, and I haven’t been able to run much since then. This is great because my commute takes about the same time on Metro or on bike, but on the bike I’m exercising. I’d look fantastic if I could cut back on the strong IPAs.
