There are plenty of us who ride year round and never use studded tires. Most winters, there are a tiny handful of days when that’s arguably necessary, though I have generally done fine with careful riding and slightly knobby tires for the very worst of it. As winter riding gear goes, that would be pretty far down there on my list of must-haves.

Agreed. I’ve never used studs, even on roads like this.

Unless you count that one big stud on top of the bike.

    Yes. Bikes go in snow!

This was when I lived in SLC. You can take your bike right on the trains there. The first winter I was there it snowed a ton and I ended up taking the train frequently. The last winter it snowed once (on a work day anyway). I almost bit off more than I could chew riding that day on slicks. Would have been a piece of cake with appropriate winter tires of some sort. Good traction makes snowy/icy conditions safer and more comfortable. A front studded tire with a regular rear tire is a good compromise, steering and braking are not over rated.

On the other hand, what’s up with the bug eyed guy I see walking every single day around the airport? And the skinny black dude walking the other way?

I like that guy. I can’t figure what his deal is but I wave and say good morning to him every day. I call him Smokey Bob in my head cause 9 out of 10 times I see him he’s smoking. He was the only other person out on the MVT this morning in the rain at 7 am. We’ve crossed paths as far up as the 14th st bridge and as far south as 4mr trail. When the weather is nice he’s usually sittin in the grass at gravelly point hangin out in the afternoon staring at the sky.

I’ve seen “Smokey Bob the umbrella man” as far South as the bus stop at Slaters Lane in Alexandria.

I don’t want to support anti-social (or self destructive) behavior, but I think I’ll take him a hot cup of coffee one morning and introduce myself.
