ParticipantNice idea! It’s always good to revisit the crap I say and call myself on it.
“Next year I think I’ll make my goal 3,500, but I’m going to push for more miles in the winter, spring and fall so that during the disgustingly hot days over the summer I won’t need to get up at 4am to avoid 100+ temps. I also don’t have any big rides planned for summer so I won’t need to train for anything. Maybe I’ll focus on commuting instead.“
So far I’m about 500 miles ahead of my 3,500 mile goal so I should be able to make 4,000 again. Aside from a 200K in MN soon I am still planning on reducing my cycling load from July-September to grocery tips and whatever though. I don’t think I’ll focus on commuting like I said. Instead, I’d like to focus on losing the 20 pounds through eating better, calorie counting, yoga, and some cycling.
“More than an annual mileage goal, my main goal for the year is to complete a 300K. I also want to drop 20 pounds permanently.“
I completed my 300 in early May. (Woo hoo!) It was great. It was a pretty flat route though, so I need to toughen up my endurance for long rides with some climbing. I think if I focus on losing weight now it will help more in the long run than sweating my balls off this summer. Especially if I want to try a Fleche or a 400K next year. 20 less pounds will make a big difference over long distances. For some reason, no matter how easy or hard a ride is, cycling jumps my appetite to the bottomless pit setting and it causes me to overeat.
Overall I’d say I’m on track for my goals, though they were quite modest to begin with. I’m excited for the ride in MN! It’s in conjunction with a visit to see my nephews but just taking my bike out there means we have to drive instead of fly, which lengthens the trip by a day or 2. Fortunately congress is helping me save vacation time by granting me unpaid furlough days instead. Hah!

ParticipantAwesome! I was thinking about goals this weekend:
Going back to that old post here is what I said:
Goal for 2013 — 3500 miles. — I’m a little ahead of this. And it is all your fault (see Freezing Saddles below). Yesterday I got my 3,000th (well 3000.8 but who is counting) according to Strava.

Non-distance bike-related goals:
1. Stop lurking on the forum and post — this is post one so I can say one resolution accomplished! I’m now a “regularly contributing member”.
2. Commute through winter. I got an Ogre and can get snow tires if needed …. Will sign up for Freezing Saddles shortly. — Done and done. I was even awarded the “Queen of the World” prize. Can’t wait for next year!
3. Ride a Century (Ok, I guess that is distance related). — Not yet but looking at the Culpepper Century in October.July 1, 2013 at 2:23 pm #974322hozn
ParticipantI guess I never posted my goals on the original thread. My quantitative goal for the year was going to be 10k miles. I’m on track at 5,204 (thanks, BAFS), but I’m not going to get to 10k this year because we’ve got a baby due in late Sept. My more important goal was to ride more social rides and fewer races. So have only one one proper (MTB) race this year and instead am doing more shop/group rides — and while not quite as casual, Kill Bill and Total200 fall in the “social ride” category too.

ParticipantMy goal is to ride my bike and to have fun. Pretty much meeting my goal.

ParticipantMy goals for this year were:
Compete in a MTB race
Get a gold metal in the Crystal City Challenge
Complete a Century ride
Log 2000 miles total for the year. Results to date
I placed 5th in my first MTB relay race
I got my gold medal in Crystal City Challenge (Shockingly faster time than I thought I was going to have Hello drafting!)
I have not completed my century ride, I have maxed out at 56 miles in one ride
I reached the 1018 mile mark this weekend so I am on pace for my 2000 mile year.Updated goals
I want to do more competition type riding. Now I just have to find out what those competitions will be.July 1, 2013 at 2:44 pm #974329Dickie
ParticipantAll of you rock, it’s so inspiring to see what you are all doing!
My goals and progress for the year:
1) 5000 miles for the year – Currently at 2500 but lost 6 weeks due to illness so I feel good about where I’m at.
2) Ride a century – DONE…. did 107 miles a few weekends ago with the Dreaded Shawn
3) Compete in an event – DONE… finished the Air Force Challenge better than I expected, 65 miles, 7 laps, 20 MPH average
4) Try to ride everyday during the summer – So far so good, although my upcoming trip to Boston might ruin that.
5) Join Strava – DONE – don’t know why I waited so long.
6) Participate in a group/shop ride – Fail so far… FB Mosaic ride is on my radar
7) Ride with my family and friends more – Going really well! What I want to add:
– Participate in Freezing Saddles this year
– Average 600 miles a month for the remainder of the year
– Try some CX riding
– Compete in a race (although it scares the crap out of me)
– Ride Skyline Dr.July 1, 2013 at 2:50 pm #974331KelOnWheels
ParticipantI’m at about 700 miles for the year
Next year I’d like to hit 3000, I think. That seems like a nice number. (If I commute 4 times a week I’ll break 4000.)
I hope I will have a new bike soon.
I am also terrible at hills and want to get over my fear of descents
(Here is my hill. http://app.strava.com/segments/700156 )
I want to do a scary challenge like a century or double.
I want to learn to mountain bike.
I think in 2014 I might like to investigate cyclocross. How DOES one get started in ‘cross?
I had more things to say but I’m coming down with a cold and my brains are all floaty.
Oh! Group rides. I would like to learn those.
And I want to participate more in Local Bike Things.
And wrenching.
Also I still need some new shorts.Well let’s see. I’m only at 800 miles for the year so I’d better get to work!
I DO have a new bike!
Getting better (SLOOOOWLY) at hills and descents!
I am going to try doing a metric century soon.
Gonna take REI’s mountain bike class.
Gotta start running again!
Don’t have a cold right now.
Went on a group ride and it was fun! Must do more of that.
Learned some wrenchin’.
Got some new shorts. How YOU doin’?

ParticipantMy stated goals in that thread were to ride 5,000 miles and do a century. I did the century last weekend, and I’ll hit the 5,000 miles around the middle of this month. I guess I aimed too low.

Participant“I’m hoping to ride at least 1000 km outdoors in each month of 2013 (that’s just under 7500 miles). While I’ve exceeded that in most months for the past few years (over 11,000 in 2010, 11, & 12), with job related travel, I want to keep the basic goals realistic.
It seems like I’m in a rut as far as my longer rides are concerned and would like to get out and do new routes. However, the options are limited since I rarely will drive to start a bike ride. I’m looking at some of the PPTC ride start points to figure out how to get there by bike. For several it would turn a 30-40 ride into a century or more. Nothing wrong with that!”
Ok, so far so good. I was at just over 6300 miles at the end of June and did manage to get over 800 miles in each month even after missing two and a half weeks with a sprained ankle. The one thing that happened due to that accident is that I had to miss several bike commutes for the first time in four years. I’ve done a few new routes this year and we are now a two car family for the next 12 months so I have more options of where I can ride.

ParticipantTotally blown it out of the water:
— So I’m going do resolve to almost double that at 2500 miles for 2013.
I was at 2253 yesterday. Just mind blowing. I’ve got 2 weeks to my 1 year anniversary of the ride that started it all, I should eclipse 2500 by then.

ParticipantQuote:I don’t really have any goals for next year.
– I enjoy commuting on my single speed more than my road bike
– I may enjoy riding gravel more than road
– Miles aren’t really that important
– I look forward to riding in snow or ice on studded tiresI will probably buy a license and try to do at least 6 races. I’ll also try not to break any bones, etc. and try not to buy more than one new bike. A rando event would be fun since I’ve never tried one and endurance is not my strong point.
I guess I jinxed myself! Races are sort of out of the window at least until CX season though I did manage to watch some of the Tysons GP this weekend. I did do a good amount of riding on the studded tires, some really great gravel rides, and did a bit on the single speed (although I switched to the road bike towards the end of BAFS to make higher mileage rides easier).
For the second half of the year I’d like to do some more single speed or fixed riding, Skyline or similar a couple times, and maybe actually commit to doing real interval sessions on a semi-regular basis. I’d also like to work on my endurance, maybe with a self-paced 125-150mi ride or something. I’m expecting I’ll probably still end up with about 7k miles, same as last year. That’s not really a goal though.
Oh, and I want to finish the Strava Rapha climbing challenge since you actually get a physical patch (not just digital). I have the one from last year and just haven’t found a good place to put it yet.

ParticipantHey, I didn’t make any mileage goals! Brilliant. So, um, I’m exactly where I wanted to me on that front.
For 2013, I’ve signed up for the Total 200 — not sure if it will be 200 miles or 200 kilometers; we’ll see how the training goes. I am also leading the scouts on the C&O Canal towpath from Cumberland to DC
Still on track to accomplish both by the middle of July.
I might be getting to two new states I have never been to next year, and if that happens, they are both excellent places to ride, I am told.
Well, I’ll be getting to one new state in August — and WILL be riding.
Other than that, I’ll put the perennial “learn how to mountain bike better” on the list again,
Um, *crickets* . . .
and continued domination of Strava segments where no woman has gone before me.
Yep, I am pretty much the QOM of every segment where I’m the only woman who’s ridden it.

ParticipantI think I was on maternity leave during the goals portion of the event. But if I had to make goals, I probably would have said:
-
Bike to work
-
Get back on a pedal bike (from the ebike)
-
Start Kidical Mass Arlington
-
Bike with the kids as much as possible
-
Get back into shape
So I’ve done the first 4. (#4 should become even more fun by the end of the week). Working on the last. Well, still, pretty good year.
For all of you wanting to do a group ride, I cordially invite you to join us on a Kidical Mass ride. The next official one is Sunday, July 21. There will likely be a “Tour de Kidical” ride (ride to watch some Tour de France action). Stay tuned on kidicalmassarl.blogspot.com
