Hi there, I’m Megan (aka Megabeth here on the forum) and I’m going to be riding around Hains Point loop for 100 miles* on Sunday, December 22nd. I’m doing this to raise awareness and funds for the Washington Area Bicycling Association’s Women & Bicycles program. Come join me for a day of food, festivities, and fun!

Last year, I had a crazy idea. I was going to ride 100 miles around the Hains Point 3-mile loop on a cold December day. I asked the cycling community to join me on that cold December day and the results were beyond my wildest dreams. We had over 100 riders join me throughout the day as well as other friends and supporters that hung out at the pit stop. We had contests, giveaways, hand-ups, freebies from generous sponsors and food.

I’m doing the ride again this year. And, I know it’s going to be bigger and better! WABA’s Women & Bicycles program is now in full swing and it’s been an awesome program.

Sure, I’m riding 100 miles* but *you* can ride as much or as little as you like. Or, you can just show up to participate in the festivities to show your support.

Be sure to visit http://www.HainsPoint100.com for all the ride details and to let me know you’re coming (or donating!) I’ll be posting updates, details and other info here on the forum, as well

    * Actually 115 miles this year because friends took me up on my WABA Membership Challenge where I would ride extra miles this year if they became a new WABA member…thanks, ya’ll.

Do I wanna swap out my tires (Freedom Ryder 35s) for 28s or 25s or something? That would require going and buying tires :P

I would. My Kona Jake came stock with those in 32s, and I really didn’t like them – I generally agree with this review, although mine weren’t the “Deluxe” – I think I have a previous model year. The tread is the same though (easy to get small gravel bits stuck in it).

They’re fine for commuting and gravel and stuff, but speedy they are not. (I read that review too :D)

Gatorskins maybe? (looking at what REI has in stock). Will I need to swap tubes too?

I’ve had pretty good success with Gatorskins. I’d think that going from 35 to 28 may be easier with new tubes as well. REI has novarra tubes in 700-26/32 so that might be a good choice.

28 maybe, 25 no. 25 and narrower tires are for race day only.

Severe thunderstorm watch until 10 am, for D.C. and surrounding jurisdictions. The winds have already picked up. Possible gusts as high as 60 mph, according to NBC Washington!

Would a later start time be in order?

You can start any time you want. This is apparently formally informal.

My plan was to leave 730-800 and go via Arl Loop by way of Shirlington and the airport. I decided to hold off a bit until the first predicted round of rough weather came through–nothing much materialized, so I guess I’ll just get started. After all that’s why Santa got me a rain/winter bike. I’m sticking with my route. Maybe I’ll see you if you’re going my way!? Dave

Looks like a line of heavy showers now entering the beltway from the west. Should be in downtown within the hour I’d say, looking at the radar.

Glad I could be there to get something resembling two+ laps in, including taking part in the “official” start, before returning home to the kids (who might have been with me had the weather cooperated).

Good luck to everyone still riding.

Lots of fun on the ride today, until I broke a spoke after about 60 miles (I rode 15 from home to get to the start.)

I wasn’t too terribly sad having a good excuse not to make one more d*** loop, I must say :)

I was reaaaaaally happy I put the 28s on. :D

I managed 12 laps before my legs wore out. Not terrible for having been sick the last couple of weeks. Had fun riding and chatting with people!

Fine time for all. Was great to see a lot of friends.

Amazing support for riders and onlookers. Kudos to Megabeth and WABA.

Pretty weird that on the first full day of winter we were riding in the rain in short sleeved jerseys and cycling shorts.

Fog on the Potomac was pretty neat.
