You seem like a prime candidate for Freezing Saddles, Kitty. You can be on my team. Everyone wants to be on my team.

ParticipantWelcome Kitty!
You sound like a great addition to our little biking cult. Be sure to check out the trail network in Maryland; it’s great! You can bike there or take metro.
You may wish to try riding to Purcellville and back via the W&OD for century training. You can’t get lost, there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments, and lots of cyclists to wave to and meet. Just be sure to check the weather forecasts carefully for thunderstorms (which we seem to be plagued with this year – sigh).
Be sure to join us for our next happy hour (usually the third Thursday of the month at Capitol Brewery in Shirlington – watch for the forum posting) or at any of the breakfast meetups in the area.
Welcome!

Hello everyone! After years of riding around the area and getting deeper and deeper into the local bike scene, riding for Arlington in the National Bike Challenge, seeking every trail I can find, and never missing “Bike to Work Day” (even when its torrential rain), I thought I’d finally get on the forum and introduce myself!
My name is Grace (though for these purposes you can all me “Kitty,” an old nickname). I came to the area about 5 years ago from Michigan for grad school (GWU) and stayed to work. In that time I’ve always lived in Arlington, largely because of how bike-friendly it is!
My love for cycling (and my skill/comfort with it) has only grown each year I’ve been here. It started with just trying to commute everyday and live car-free as a student. It then evolved into exploring the city and surroundings by bike (the only way to travel!), and joining WABA. Now I’m in my third year of the National Bike Challenge and training for my first century! (Tour de Fredrick in August).
Anyway, its nice to meet you all. I hope to see you around–on the road or online!
Um, are we twins?
I also came from MI for grad school at GWU, although 7 years ago (wow I’m getting old). I’m also trying for my first century this year, although I think we’re looking at the Seagull Century since I wanted to avoid biking on 110 degree days.

Wouldn’t that count as a double Century (100 miles @ 100°F)? Or go for the triple century (100 miles @ 100°F @ 100% relative humidity).

ParticipantMy most humble salutations to you, forum newcomer.
Oh, and as a member of Steve O’s team, I can confirm you want to be on his team.

ParticipantWelcome, Kitty.
FYI, you are the third trail kitty documented on this forum. The others are both orange tabbies – “Hobo” hangs out on the W&OD east of Rt. 50, and “Blue” is seen on the Bluemont Junction near the intersection with the W&OD. I don’t know if you are an orange tabby too, but that would be a cool coincidence.

May I be on your team, too? Wait, aren’t teams selected by the draw, taking into account previous performance and all that?

ParticipantWow! You guys sure know now to make a gal feel welcome! I’m “spoked” to finally join the community. (Sorry guys, I love punny word-play…)
I haven’t been a regular forum denizen in years, but I’m really excited to get into this one. Finally I can try to figure out who these other folks on the Bike Challenge are!Thank you all so much. Though I really must reply to a few of these specifically…

This past winter I started seeing this “Freezing Saddles” on Twitter. Pick me for your team Steve, and I’m in!
While I spent more time taking the Metro than I care to admit this past winter, if the NBC can get me to ride in 100 heat and thunderstorms, a challenge or team effort would get me out there in the snow.

Welcome!
Late last season I made it out to Rockville for the first time and was blown away by the northern part of the Rockcreek park trails and the Bethesda trolly trail! (Last summer was also a first for Sligo and MacArthur to Potomac, MD). I’m definitely interested in recommendations!
As for Purcellville, I was thinking about doing that for my last big ride before the century! The furthest I’ve gone on W&O was Gallows Rd… I need to find a good restroom option

Awesome Emm! I was about to discount the twins thing until I did the math and realize I came out here in 2009 (Wow. Where did the years go?) Where are you from in the ol’ Mitten? I hail from Port Huron and went to MSU.

That’s delightful! 😮 Alas I lack the stripes, but there are some photos out there with me in black cat ears…

The ride out to Lake Anacostia is great along the trails; you can cheat by taking the metro out to Hyattsville or Tacoma Park.
Regarding bathroom breaks along the W&OD, Shirlington is good at the start (you can use the library or Harris Teeter for instance). Get breakfast at Best Buns!
In Vienna, Whole Foods is located right on the trail.
Reston Town Center is a great stop for food and comfort breaks. The turn off isn’t marked so be sure to check a map before you go. There are a ton of restaurants and stores located right next to the trail; you just have to take the small spur uphill to reach the complex.
In Ashburn, there is the famed Carolina Brothers Pit B&B joint, also located on the trail (you can’t miss it). I’m not a big fan of their food but if you’ve been riding non-stop to get there, it suddenly tastes real good!
In Purcellville, there are a few eateries in the neighborhood (check your cellphone map) and if I recall correctly, bathrooms in the train depot at the end.
If you carry a cellphone, you will find that there are plenty of places to stop along the way that only require a quick detour off the trail. That convenience, combined with the fact that there are relatively few hills on the trail make it a very popular first century (when combined with say, the Arlington loop). Be careful about how much time you spend stopping if you are going for a personal best in terms of miles, you probably don’t want to be riding back in the dark. Be sure you bring an extra tube and know how to change a flat tire (though people are usually very good about offering assistance).
A word of caution, you won’t have any tree cover till you hit Leesburg so wear lots of sunscreen. The trail finally loses the electrical lines and is quite pretty west of Leesburg; I wished the whole trail looked that way; the trail also gets curvier. Up to Clarks Gap is a steady climb (1-3%?) which is a bit of a surprise but makes good fun coming back. Heading west on the trail is a bit uphill overall (about 1%) so coming back is usually faster.
Now I’m getting jealous since I wish I could do this ride. Alas, I am hobbled with a broken ankle (non cycling related) and won’t be on the bike for another month.

ParticipantOoo these are some great suggestions! Thank you so much!
Its nice to know where I can make pit stops on something like the WO&D (especially with all of the sun meaning a need to plenty of water).
And the ones starting from Phoenix Bikes are great because its a 6-8 mile ride for me to get down there, which only serves to pad the mileage for the ride!

Surprisingly no one has mentioned all the awesome breweries along the W&OD as convenience stops. There are plenty, starting with Capital City Brewing in Shirlington (at Mile 0) and ending with Adroit Theory and Corcoran in Purcellville at the end of the trail (Mile 44?).
I highly recommend that you stop in and have a tasting or two while you are out there. 😎

That’s right! I came across the website Bikeable Brews while planning my ride to Purcellville this Saturday.
