Green paint in on the new bike box at Veitch/Lee/Custis!

That being said, part of me wishes they would do a green dotted bike lane thru the intersection on the other side of the street. It seems to me that people making the left turn onto Lee Hwy that the SUV pictured above is about to make is actually the most dangerous part of that intersection for bikes/peds (for those heading toward Courthouse).

Look where that SUV is in the lane. No amount of paint in the road is going to make that clown safe to ride around.

Completely agree. Also, when coming up Vietch toward Courthouse, the lane is fairly wide and I’m not sure where to position myself when waiting to cross Lee on a red light. Putting on my LCI hat I would think over to the right is best, but then I am blocking motorists who could otherwise turn right on red. It’s sort of an unmarked double lane.

What I do here and other situations where there is a red light with potential right turns on red is to stay to the right and look back at any car behind me. If the car signals that it wants to turn right, I skooch over to the left and wave the car by me on the right. It take little effort on my part and drivers appreciate it.

There’s a sign hanging from the same wires as the stop light in Tim’s picture above. That sign (according to both my memory and google street view) says no right turn on red. I’d go with the ArlCo roads engineer on this one…

Dismal and I are talking about when you are riding the opposite direction on Vietch. E.g., coming from Bergmann’s side crossing over to new green paint side.

If there is no turn on red there, I’m not seeing the sign on Google Street view and certainly this would be news to the multitudes of motorists I have seen turn right on red at that spot.

Oh, and they have yet to deal with the light timing issue. Basically, a bike headed north on Veitch can enter the intersection on green, but not get to the other side of Lee before westbound Lee gets green. That could lead to a very dangerous situation.

As Liz said, we are talking about people heading south on Viecht, and making a right on red to head west on Lee. That part of Viecht (the Northwest corner of the intersection, I suppose), is a sort of odd double lane that is unmarked. Lots of people use that part of Viecht after exiting the Custis to head into Courthouse.

I almost got whacked here by an Arlington County school bus. I was going south on Veitch with the green light. The bus was going east on Lee and turned right on Veitch without stopping despite the red light. I got the bus number and filed a complaint with the school transportation department. They said they’d look into it, but never followed up. I stupidly never called to remind them to follow up. I even submitted a printout of a Google Earth plot with my GPS file showing how I had to swerve to avoid getting hit.

Right turns on red should be outlawed. They are not common in other countries. When I lived in France, I asked if right turns were allowed at red lights and they thought that was hilarious. Why not left on red, or straight on red too? Why not just have a stop sign then?
