ParticipantDarn, I could have caught up on some sleep if I had taken the red line today.

Tow path was fine this morning, at least from Fletchers to Chain Bridge. It was extra bumpy as it usually is after a good soak, and there are a few puddles here and there, but otherwise it was good to go.

ParticipantIt was amazing out this morning!
I couldn’t make myself go fast at all though, even though I was running late. I was enjoying the ride too much.
The skully jersey was worn in honor of Bike Like A Pirate Day, although I forgot to wear my skully socks. THE SHAME!
Oh! I forgot about the Mysterious Happening that happened on the way in.
So there I was, riding along by the airport, looking at all the car traffic on the GDubs, when I spotted a black Cannondale neatly placed upside down in the grass by the side of the road. Not much farther up on the side of the road was a tan sedan. A ways up farther than that was another car and a police car with flashers.
😮 says me. But no cyclist did I see! Where did the cyclist be?
As I headed toward the Gravelly Point parking lot, the mystery was solved. There, waaaaaay up the parking lot access road, were a police officer and a cyclist pushing a disabled car.
Then when I got to work, Mystery #2 – a green MTB with a Bike Arlington reflective band was parked in the bike rack! WHO YOU BE?

Participantaaaand once again, I’m pissed at myself. I couldn’t get to sleep last night, and was too groggy this morning at 6 to realize how much I needed to ride in. So, Monday – beautiful day I don’t ride, Tuesday – crappy Armageddon weather that I ride in, Wednesday – another beautiful day I don’t ride…. damnit. I’ve done my commute enough times now that the ride itself is the easy part, the waking up to do it is the hard part

ParticipantGreat day for gender equality also–all the ELITE cyclists passing in the middle lane today on w&od/custis seemed to be women, which is atypical.
The only bad part of my commute was turning onto chain bridge in the dark and finding grooved pavement. I hadn’t previously tried to ride at speed on grooved pavement, and hope to not do so again. I decided to bail onto the sidewalk, and found myself trapped until there was a large enough gap to stop, dismount, and lift the bike out of the grooved pit onto a curb cut. Mental note: don’t choose that route again for a while.

ParticipantI get to ride all the way home to Annandale today instead of just to Old Town. Yay for me!

ParticipantSOOO mad I didn’t ride today, it is gorgeous out there! I should’ve at least packed the bike in the back of the car so I could ride home. I recently asked about leaving my car at work and they were cool with it. It’s a gated parking lot with 24 hour guards, so such an awesome option. I can drive in Monday morning with all clothes for the week, then bike home that afternoon and only bike home (the hard 1/2 of the commute) when I want, whether it’s Tuesday evening or Friday evening.

ParticipantIt is a beautiful day to ride in. I had a 5:15 wake-up call for coaching my 6:30-8am rowing practice. Drove home, and decided “Its too nice not to ride, and I’m going to be late anyway, so what the hell…” Threw my stuff in my commuter bag and off I went. Really nice, trail and road mostly mine, in before 10. 43 minutes from Westover area to King St. metro area is as fast or faster than it would have been by car! Go out of shape me.
The trick is that now I am dragging. If you see me on my way home, give me a push… I’ll probably need it.

Pro-tip: Pack all your gear up the night before and have everything ready to go. That way, in the morning it’s more of a hassle to unpack everything than it is to just bike in!

I do, and did last night. All packed and ready to go, even the water bottles. Unfortunately, even with that, I have to get up an hour earlier to bike vs. drive. So when I’m tired or didn’t sleep well, that extra hour of sleep in the morning is golden
I just slipped my pannier off the bike and carried it in :p If my commute wasn’t so damn long……

Do you have a hybrid option? Drive to some intermediate point then bike from there? I completely sympathize with wanting more sleep. But man, it’s a shame to miss out on this AMAZING weather.
As a longer term option, Arlington is a wonderful place to live (*I admit I don’t remember where you’re going to-from but if Arlington is closer to your work, it’s worth considering*)
