We were out there yesterday on the W&OD as well heading out in the morning to come back via White’s Ferry/River Road. I wanted to change the route to come back via the W&OD instead of Maryland but I was overruled in the name of avoiding afternoon Fred traffic on the W&OD.
And who could forget their first trip up Sugarloaf?

The Fred traffic wasn’t that bad surprisingly.
By 8am it was pretty frustrating between Arlington and Vienna. After that things cleared out pretty well and we were moving from Hunter Mill to Leesburg with only the occasional slow down to safely get around other trail users.

Yeah, we were through there before 8am for the most part. I was surprised how light it was on the way back around 3 pm. I guess the heat drove the Fred’s away.

It was the ride down Sugarloaf that stuck with me. It took about an hour to get my hands out of the claw shape caused by pulling on my brake levers so hard for so long.

And I had to get new fillings after the road rattled a few out of my teeth. But it’s a gratifying climb nonetheless…

As I said to Tim when we were heading down Sugarloaf – I’m a total chicken-sh*t descender. Switchbacks are both fun and terrifying for me. That said, it’s hands off the brakes until you approach the corner then hard on the brakes for as short as possible. You can still go slow through the bends like I do while staying off the brakes most of the the time.

ParticipantNice! My first century ever was doing the end-to-end W&OD plus the Arlington Loop. I guess it’s kind of a tradition
The longest mostly-continuous climb that I know of that is somewhat local is to start in Sperryville, climbing up to Skyline Drive, and then continuing on south to Pinnacles. I think this takes you from about 700 feet to 3500 or so, with no real flats except for right at the entrance to Shenandoah NP.
That’s a good one

That was my first 100 mile ride day back in 2008. Should we take a survey?

It was my second and just a few weeks ago- got to my turn-off to work and just kept going until the WO&D ended… had no intention of doing a century that day.
My first was on one of the Wounded Warriors rides to/from Annapolis… they did it with hand bikes, single cranks and in one case, blind (on the back of a tandem)!

Indeed, Haute Dogs is down Main Street and right around the corner in a strip shopping center. Its a great end of W&OD reward. My first experience was awesome!!!!!
Anyone know if the Alexandria location is up and running yet? The website doesn’t look like it’s been updated in months. I think I’ll check it out later today an report back on my success or failure.

I think it was supposed to open in July or August. Let me send them a Tweet and find out.
