ParticipantIf you try to wait for a day to commute when the weather is completely clear you may never ride. I have learned to just ignore the weather forecaster’s and just try to be prepared. i am sure in the winter the rain will be bad but during the summer it just means go slower to me. My commuter/with fenders can handle wet roads easily. And the plus side is when it rains the Mount Vernon Trial is free of most runners and walkers.

ParticipantYeah, don’t let the weather forecast affect your decision to ride — unless the forecast is severe thunderstorms or tornados (or sharknados!) in which case you probably want to investigate further before committing to a commute by bicycle. Also I’ve found that there’s a different meaning to forecasts in the winter and summer too. I don’t typically expect to get wet if it’s less than 40% chance of thunderstorms in the summer; however, I always expect to get wet if it’s a 40% chance of rain in the winter. And obviously getting wet in the winter is something that requires a little more planning/clothing.
Fenders are good. Tires with good grip in the wet are good too. I’ve switched to GP4000S reflex tires on my commuter and am loving the improved ride & wet-road traction over the tubeless Hutchinson Intensives they replaced. And reflective rims help get me noticed at road crossings in these increasingly darker months.

ParticipantI have to say that Rule #5 clearly does not apply to weather-related issues. Consider this…Rule #9 states that “If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.” Notice that it does not say, “During times of bad weather, see Rule #5”. No, riding in bad weather falls outside the scope of Rule #5, since Rule #9 implies that riding in bad weather is an exceptional circumstance, because you are a badass for riding in it, rather than stating that you need to HTFU and ride in it. #confessyourunpopularopinion

Participantit’s not the rain part that makes me wuss out, it’s the lightning part.

As opposed to reading Rule # 9 as a validation that you have met the requirements of Rule # 5?

ParticipantI use one of these for credit cards/money/ID and to keep my phone dry; I was recently drenched during a ride but everything stayed dry. Note that it says it will not carry the iphone 5.
If I want to keep things super light I use the Butterfly Wallet Ultralight Wallet.

Nope. You should meet the requirements of Rule 5 so that you can achieve Rule 9. If you can’t meet Rule 9, you have violated Rule 5. And if you violate Rule 5, you have also violated Rule 1.
Why don’t you want to follow The Rules, Mark?
