I might get shoes. I bought my first pair of studded tires recently.

Regardless of this contest, I am buying one new winter focused item that should help with my score: Winter shoes. I somehow have misplaced my old Shimano SM-81’s. I have searched every square meter of my house and cannot find them.

How do you like those shoes? I’ve been looking at them quite a bit, but haven’t gone about getting any. What is the sizing like? Part of my inaction is that there is nowhere to try them on around these parts.

I got these for Christmas, but they have been on my wish list since it got cold in anticipation for FS. Can’t recommend them enough. I rode yesterday in them for about 2 hours and my feet were really comfortable, where as before they were numb and freezing cold.

The last thing I need is the Pearl Izumi Amfib bibs. Supposedly good for riding down to 20 F. The price is on the hefty side and the way this winter is going I might not even need them. Right now I have a pair of Gore Power 2.0 Thermal Bib tights, and they are fine until the wind really kicks up.

But with the booties….the booties…I will be UNSTOPPABLE. Unless it rains…or snows…

The amfib bibs are awesome. I wear them down below 20F without problem. They are too hot above freezing (unless there is a significant headwind). Actually, I have the tights — not bibs — since I prefer long pants / tights without a chamois (so I can rewear them a few times between laundry loads).

A set of Schwalbe Marathon winter studs and a spare wheelset on which to mount them.

Not specifically for this, but for Christmas I got a rain suit, a pair of sealskinz gloves, a new blinky, and a Performance gift certificate. Prior to Christmas, I gifted myself 6 pairs of merino socks, but for some reason the peeps at On-One haven’t processed my order yet (placed 9 days ago!).

So now I have two performance gift certificates to go along with some gift cash that I am devoting to all-things bike. I can’t decide if I should be practical and devote this money/certificates to the inevitable drive train rebuild in the Spring, or, buy a new crankset to replace the floppy FSA crankset that came with the bike, or…something(s) else not entirely practical.

I liked them and am sad they have gone, regardless, the SM-81 was not the most super winter shoe. They were not very warm compared to my last winter shoe, however, I never got cold toes in this mild-to-me climate. Under 0C for long rides I would run toe warmer packs.

They were also very heavy, only water resistant, and not very tall. I often had water leaking in from the top since they were not tall enough to allow my tights or pants to stay over them. A big problem at times.

I plan to get Mavic Drift shoes next.

They will change your cycling life.

I love my bar mitts. Easily the best bicycle accessory winterizing purchase I ever made. Sadly, I had to go through like five iterations of glove/hand-warming combos to finally discover them in polar vortex round ii despite a few people previously mentioning them.

For the broader subject, I finally acquired a nice rain jacket. I’m fine with cold. Only other thing holding me back would be getting some nice studded tires. At the same time, riding anywhere from my house requires a fairly significant descent that I wouldn’t trust at all in any snow/ice/slickness. I even get nervous if it’s raining.

I’m upgrading to disc brakes. Today I’m picking up a fork, wheelset, rotor and Avid BB7’s from a guy on the DC bike swap meet Facebook group.

I have my eye on a couple of frames but am going to hold off a few weeks on that.

Anyone have a 56cm ish disc compatible commuter/CX/touring type frame hanging around?

I want to get more leggings. I have a pair I use occasionally, sometimes under my regular pants and sometimes for rugby practice, but I stole them from the wife, and think they are cotton. Leggings/tights (the wife says they are different but I can’t keep the difference straight) suggestions/comments?

It should be noted that I usually have a ~3 mile ride into the office and don’t wear ‘bike stuff.’ I have overpants for when it is wet/below freezing, but other than that I wear my regular clothes.

I picked up a wheelset and studded tires this year, can’t wait to try them out! Er…hope I won’t be using them too often.

I don’t think they make stems with a clamp diameter that will fit those bars.
