I’m looking for a left sided mount for my shiny new Garmin 800. The stem mount makes it too hard to see. Has anyone tried using the FlipLoc STD X? How sturdy are these mounts? I see Barfly is also very popular but I’d prefer a left side mount due to the other gizmos on my handlebar but it’s not a deal breaker. I’ve also read that the K-Edge tends to shave off bits of plastic from the Garmin’s back so am wary of purchasing one of them.
I have a standard Barfly for my Edge 500 that I’m not using at the moment for the exact reason you mentioned… because it only mounts from one side of the bars and interferes with my light (and battery) mounting system. When I WAS using it it was very sturdy. I have since switched back to the mount provided by Garmin which works fine for me…. just not as cool looking.

ParticipantI’ve got many different models.
Barfly makes 3 different ones. I’ve got all 3 and love them. They are available in white if you like something other than black.
- Regular one: Love them. I’ve got 3 of these… got one when they first came out. All are perfect.
- TT version: I use these on my aero bars and also on my mountain bikes with Jones H-bars. Nicely designed!
- 1.1: The new version is cheaper… $24 vs $40. Works perfectly.
Garmin Out Front: I like this one a lot because it has a really good shim that lets me switch from 31.8 to 26.0 diameter bars. Others don’t really come set up to make that easy. This holds the garmin a little lower (closer to the ground) than the others out there. It is different, not necessarily bad.
SRAM Quickview Garmin Mount: This one is the cheapest out there that I’ve seen ($20). It works fine. It doesn’t feel as sturdy as the Garmin or Barfly mounts, but I have no reason to doubt it.
I’m not a fan of the KEdge for the reason you identify. I also wonder why it is a 2-piece mount when 1 piece is really all you need. Just doesn’t appear to be a design that makes sense.
If I were buying one today for a 31.8mm bar, I’d probably get the Garmin…. though it is very close between the Garmin, Barfly and SRAM.
As usual that’s a lot of information for a relatively simple question.

ParticipantI have the SRAM mount on my CX bike and it works fine for my 500. Never an issue on bumpy terrain, although if I crashed hard on it I wouldn’t be surprised if the plastic were to undergo permanent deformation. As Dirt says, it’s only $20.
I have a cheap ebay “handlebar extender” thing on my road bike. I put the regular Garmin mount on that, and there’s still space for a front blinkie (or something else). The graphics on it are a bit tacky but it’s light, can mount either side, and also works fine.

ParticipantI have the K-Edge mount and like it very much. I haven’t noticed any plastic shaving. I like the two piece design because it lets you adjust the location of your Garmin to avoid brake cables and other things. Plus, you have the flexibility to move it to your liking. Its very solid and secure. No complaints at all except its a little pricey but so are the others for a little piece of plastic.

ParticipantI have the SRAM mount. Securing bolt needs a bit of loctite, in my experience.

Cool info! Thanks for that.

ParticipantWith the K edge you can tuck a 200 or 500 tight to the bar or extend the mount to fit the slightly larger 800 frame type garmins. if it were fixed the 200 / 500 size would stick out a bit. Not that OCD is prevalent in roadies or anything….
I have a K-edge and have not noted it shaving anything which includes (per elite cycling convention) my Sasquach like legs

ParticipantI got the FlipLoc mount for my Garmin 800. It’s worked great thus far. It took about 1 minute to install and it holds the GPS very securely. I’ve used it on the C&O and didn’t worry about the GPS bouncing off and I don’t notice any vibrations while looking at the screen. My only complaint with the FlipLoc is the cost but I expect it will outlast the GPS unit.
