ParticipantSo…do we think other manufacturers are going to join in on this? The 2013 Raleigh I just bought has disc brakes, and a quick release lever up front that works just like the ones Trek is recalling.

I’m assuming the fear is that the quick release will open and get caught in the disc resulting in a catastrophic crash.
I don’t think this type of failure is possible on all forks. No one worries about the quick release catching on spokes, so there must be some other factors in play. That said I will check my MTB this evening.

ParticipantIt’s possible it is specific to the design of the skewers allowing them to flip further, in combination with the design of the brake boss mount. The ilustration I saw looks like the brake mount had a slanting part that could actually catch the skewer and force it into the rotors.

ParticipantThe simple fix here (which I can’t believe they didn’t mention in the recall) is just to make sure the skewer lever is on the non-disc side of the fork. I think most people (everyone?) already put the skewer on the other side since otherwise the caliper is in the way when you go to loosen the QR and unwind it to get the wheel off.

ParticipantOn my fixie, I have a quick release on my front wheel and no lawyer’s lips on the front dropout. Am I gonna die?

Agreed. Somebody ought to FOIA for CPSC for documents and emails on this — it’s a wastefully embarrassing reaction.

ParticipantThis looks like a marketing opportunity for Trek. Bring you bike into a dealer for an inspection. Get a $20 coupon. Maybe get a new quick release.
Cost of the inspection and fix? The wholesale cost of a quick release lever that doesn’t open more that 180 degrees. Oooh, free installation as well!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupon_settlement The Wikipedia article does not mention coupon issuance as a potentially profitable marketing activity. Not that I think Trek should pay for what is essentially user error.

I don’t see how it matters what side you close the lever on if the problem occurs if it comes loose; it’ll just rotate.

ParticipantSaw this first on the local news, where it was in the context of the fact that local cops on bikes use Trek police models. The report then said, “if you have a Trek bike made in the last fifteen years, STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY”.
I think that might be casting the net a little bit too wide…

ParticipantI am so lucky that I have my own skewer removal tool.

ParticipantThe recall has been to about 15 different bike brands.
