Now the real fun starts – We get our team assignments tonight, and we realize that although we haven’t seen anyone on the 14th street bridge over the last week, we’re not alone in our insanity of winter riding.

The premise of this team challenge is, over a set period of time (6pm tonight till Noon on Friday 1/16) a continent will go “live”. We will start with South America. Teams will go out and take a picture of the flag of a country from that continent. A bike must be in the photo. Players can work independently but their results will support their team. The first team to post the flag gets credit for the country, but flags can be stolen by having another team post the same flag but with more teammates in the photo (i.e. team 1 has one player posting the flag of Brazil with their bike from the Brazilian embassy, team 2 steals the flag by posting 2 of their teammates in front of a Brazilian restaurant that is flying a flag out front. . . and so on. . . with multiple steals with more and more players, or a team capture with the entire team in front of the flag.

We will focus the effort one continent at a time for about 7 days each (although we may overlap some). Below is a list of the flags that are open for South America. I will post a photo for each continent when it goes “live” so that there is no confusion of which continent a nation is in.

But before you go out there and take photos there are a few rules that you must follow:

    1) No Temporary Flags. Flags have to exist at a location that is somewhat permanent. You can’t go and print out a flag and tape it to your bike and take a photo. You can’t go buy a flag from a souvenir shop and take a photo with it. It doesn’t need to be flying – it could be painted on a wall, or printed on a menu that is taped to a window of the restaurant, but it has to be clearly displayed in one spot.

    2) Photos can only be used once to represent one country. Photos of mass UN-style flag displays (hall of nations, Org of American States, etc) can only represent one nation and cannot be reposted for other nations.

    3) One individual person can’t get credit for more than 4 flags for each continent. The purpose of this rule is to persuade other teammates to get out and take photos. (This rule does not apply to team photos for steals). Team photos (2 or more players) don’t count against this rule.

    4) Stealing – To steal a flag that has already been awarded to a team, a group of riders from a different team(more players than the previous team) takes a photo with the flag (doesn’t need to be the same location, only the same nation) and at least 1 bike. Steals do not need to increase incrementally, there just needs to be more teammates in the photo to count for the steal.

    5) Posting – To get credit for the flag – post first on this thread the photo of the flag from the authorized list of nations (see below) and include a caption that lists the nation, the team, and the player(s) in the photo. I will start a new thread for each continent. If you are not good at selfies it is okay to post the photo of the flag and bike, and then post a second photo from the same location of the group of teammates that captured it. Flags have to clearly represent the nation being posted. For example French Guiana only counts if the location is associated with the South American nation – not France itself. We probably won’t get every flag.
    Here is an example:

    6) Scoring. To win the continent teams have to earn more flags from that continent than the other teams at the prescribed deadline of the challenge (For South America it is next Friday at noon). Continent winners will win a prize at the final FS happy hour. Teams can also compete for world domination. We will use standard Risk board game continent values of South America, and Australia/Oceana 2pts; Africa 3 pts; North America and Europe 5 pts, and Asia 7 pts. Once each challenge period concludes the team with the most flag photos taken first (or stolen/captured) gets those points. The team with the most points at the end of the last challenge period is the world champion.

    7) Live periods – I will announce when each continent is live and available for capturing. Each time period will be about a week with at least one weekend if players want to mount a team ride. South America will go live at 6pm tonight and will close Noon on Friday January 16th. photos must have been taken during that time period – no photos from last summer’s bike vacation through the alps.

    8) The honor system prevails – don’t cheat, no photoshop. etc

    any questions?

The OP listed the 14 nations that count as South America for the purposes of this competition.

The list of nations posted with the challenge is the official score card. It will not be 100% geographically correct, but many nations can be considered in more than one continent (just wait for Europe). I drew a line and made a judgment call. T&T will not appear in North America, when the rest of the Caribbean is in play. (if you do google images of flags from a continent you get about 20 different lists, I’m not getting into a political discussion on the recognition of Kosovo as an independent nation during this game!)

    Other rule clarification.

    1) Please include your forum name and team name to get credit. I don’t have time to match forum names to Strava names to team lists to figure out who to give the points to.
    2) There has to be a flag in the photo. It is not capture the embassy. If you show up after sundown and they have taken the flag in, then so be it, no soup for you.
    3) For individual pictures flags and bikes are required, if you get the person in the photo, great. For team photos, you need photo evidence of the people there (and forum names in the caption) so that I can give appropriate credit. You can do that in 1 (bike+flag+people) or 2 (bike+flag and people together clearly at same spot in second photo).
