    Good morning FSers, and welcome to the “second” of our many FS side bet challenges. For those of you who are shaking their heads, FSSB #1 – Feeding Saddles, was released early to get people signed up. If you are interested in competing in FSSB #1 you can still sign up.

    T’is the season to make resolutions to lose weight, and what better way than riding your bike in the cold, bitter, windy weather. FSSB #2 is a take on last year’s Biggest Loser competition but with a slight twist, we will use the Body Mass Index metric to normalize our various . . er, Frame sizes. To compete in this challenge, weigh your self and measure your height (or look at your driver’s license). Then go to the CDC link to calculate your BMI. Post your BMI on this page, then ride throughout the winter, then reweigh yourself on or after March 15th and recalculate your BMI. Those with the greatest drop will win the side bet.

    I’ll go first. Mikey – Weight 1/2/2015 – 210 lbs, height 6’2″ – BMI – 27.0 – cue sad trombone sound.

    174 today, making it 28.95. This is actually pretty awesome, because with my increased mileage for BAFS this year, there was also increased consumption of breakfast burritos. And I don’t care what the BMI wrongniks think, dragging fat studded tires on a singlespeed for a lot of the winter built me some muscle, and maybe even a little character.

    I’ve been tracking my weight and BMI/body fat with my trainer at the gym and here are my stats from 1-09-2015 until 3-17-2015:

    BMI: 24.8 – 23.9 = (0.9)
    Body Fat: 23 – 20.6% = (2.4%)
    Weight: 168 – 158.5 = (9.5 lbs)

    I actually went down to 19.2% body fat on 3-08, but felt weak and dropped too much, too fast, so my trainer upped my food intake by 500 calories (more protien) a day. I feel stronger, eating everything in sight, but still not gaining any weight, so I will work on adding more lean muscle and cutting back on cycling once BAFS2015 ends tonight!

    6’4″ 237 28.8 BMI at start. Now 219 with a BMI of 26.7. I have really enjoyed the positive outcomes of this competition and this just adds to it.

    January was exciting. I was dropping 2.5 pounds/week and rode over 500 miles, which is a mileage total I was more likely to put out in the spring or fall in the past. The 2nd half of February and early March sucked, and I couldn’t get out much so things stagnated and I have since gained a little back. I am so far right on track for my 2015 mileage goal though, despite a 25% increase over last year’s. One thing that helped counter that loss of mileage due to snow/ice is I stopped drinking temporarily. I have some randonneuring goals in mind and it seemed like a sacrifice I could make – unlike cutting cheese from my diet.

    Overall though it was very nice to see results from hard work and smarter eating. I hope to continue this trend through the spring!

    I didn’t start out by participating in this side bet, because I’m happy with my weight where it is. However, there are still some awesome benefits, like fitness, etc. So here are my stats anyway:

    January
    5′ 9″ 153 pounds BMI=22.6

    March
    6′ 1″ 171 pounds BMI=22.6

    So my BMI stayed the same, it seems.

    Wow. You grew by 4 inches and gained 18 lbs in 3 months and retained the same BMI? All by just riding your bike?? Impressive!!!

    I have seen absolutely no change. I have never ridden this much in the first three months of the year in my entire life, and am immensely stronger and fitter. Thank you BAFS.

    Unfortunately, as opposed to Steve O my Southern European genes have kept me short. I have not grown a millimeter. And despite the incredible (for me) number of kilometers, I have eaten approximately three times as much as normal and significantly upped my consumption of red wine. For the cardiovascular benefits, of course. 😮

    So no weight change.

    But then again, I have developed massive leg muscles that must account for approximately a 10 pound fat loss and muscle gain. No, really. ;)

    Having said all of this, I would do it all again (except maybe add a few HP laps to sleep easier while away on business during the last week of the competition). Now to actually begin to watch what I eat and train, as opposed to grinding miles…

    Jokes aside, and I did not measure my waist size at the beginning of January, all of my pants were… ehm… very tight around the waist. Now I have had to purchase new belts to keep them from falling off. Also I can now wear my “skinny boy” shirts without risking bodily harm to others from button launches. There is… loose fabric around my midriff. So something positive has happened…
