Debuted in Freezing Saddles 2019, this group ride & private building tour is back for FS2020!

Washington National Cathedral — the only place you’ll find the sole American president laid to rest in D.C., a piece of the moon, Darth Vader in carved stone, plus the world’s largest publicly-built LEGO cathedral model under construction!
Beautiful art, architecture and outstanding craftsmanship abound at every turn throughout the awe-inspiring spaces of this active Episcopal church, resulting in a uniquely American spin on traditional English Gothic design.

***Please Note: The group ride is unlimited attendance. But the private guided cathedral tour I’m leading is limited to 20 participants.
***To secure a spot on the guided cathedral tour, you must use the EventBrite link below. (Please do so only if you’re sure you’ll join. Don’t use the EventBrite if you’re only joining for the bike portion.)
***If you book an EventBrite tour reservation then find you can’t attend, please cancel the reservation as soon as possible so others may take the space.

    MEET: WHEN & WHERE
Gather Saturday, Feb. 22, 8:00am at District Doughnut The Wharf, 5 Market Square SW, Washington, DC 20024. (Note, Blue Bottle Coffee is adjacent.)
Rollout at 8:30am. Estimated cathedral arrival around 10:15am.
Note: If nasty weather is forecast for the morning, I’ll try to postpone to another date (outside FS) and will update the Forum the night before.

    ROUTE
Approximately 6.5 miles to the cathedral. Mostly D.C. streets, with ~460 feet of elevation gain per RideWithGPS. (Most of it in the final 1.5 miles.)
    General route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29443536?privacy_code=l9JRtEEI6qNiUtSA
3 short, varied stops that tie in with cathedral and D.C. history.

    Pace
No drop. Stopping at stop signs & red lights. Casual city-street pace.
My private guided tour inside the cathedral runs 75-90 minutes.

    What To Bring
$12 per person Touring Visitor Admission, payable at Washington National Cathedral entry (cash/credit).

Bike lock — bike racks are available within the cathedral’s parking garage; we may have to lock bike-to-bike too, depending on final headcount.
Optional — a camera (photography is permitted inside the cathedral)
Optional – cash/credit if you want to add LEGO blocks to the cathedral model (a public fundraiser for earthquake repairs.)

    Also Kindly Requested:
Non-cleat/non-clip shoes to change into (or covers / duct tape to prevent exposed metal cleats on the marble floors.)
Top layer street clothes to cover very aero/revealing biking attire; the church is an active house of prayer every day.

Note: The cathedral has no lockers or storage for personal belongings; food/drink is not permitted inside. Drinking fountains and restrooms are available there.

After The Tour: Might pop over to Cactus Cantina for a Mt. St. Alban’s Margarita…

SIGN UP for private building tour:
Eventbrite registration required (no payment collected at reservation) to reserve a spot on the private guided tour of the cathedral:

This coming Saturday is the cathedral ride — looks like a lovely day shaping up, based on the forecast now. Maybe a bit chilly in the morning, but a high of 51 and sunny is certainly delightful!
Come out and join the ride & private tour! Details / Registration at top of this message thread.

Thank you, ChristoB50 for the tour and for arranging a delightfully sunny day! Pictures cannot capture the true beauty of the National Cathedral but here are a few. There were so many intersting facts and stories and I think my 2 favorite were the little carvings, especially the jack-o-lantern, and your story about Tom the blacksmith! Great fun, thank you!!

PS: Darth Vader was awesome too! Loved the story … and everyone’s patience while I searched for it!
