Found some Mardi Gras donuts at District Doughnuts. It was very sparkly. My coworkers were a bit worried whether I would turn purple or green after.

They also have bagel donuts which I got on a previous visit. Not sure if this counts as a bagel, a donut, or both but it was a bit strange with the cream cheese inside.c8f494e938ae0336e86c88e1a73157ee.jpg0ed83d0dd85ac9db59f96e61edeaf8f9.jpg

David! Well done! That is one beautiful Mardi Gras doughnut! I love the donut-bagel cross over, too. You can seek one out at one of the B Donut venues for comparison. I might need to create a new category… e

While Boomer may be enjoying his Mardi Gras coffee rides in the warmth of Rio, today’s Fastnacht ride was to Mainz and it’s Fastnachtmesse and we started at -1°C. The third common term for carnival in German, Fastnacht, refers to the Swabian Alemannic carnival, which is found in Baden Württemberg, Franconia (northern Bavaria), Hesse, and much of Switzerland. Although this word looks like it comes from the German for the “eve of Lent,” in fact it is based on the Old German word fasen (“to be foolish, silly, wild”). Thus the word, sometimes spelled Fasnacht (without the t) actually means something like “night of being wild and foolish.” it was pretty quiet when we stopped for lunch with coffee at the Werner’s Backstube and we weren’t sticking around for the Parade of convertibles since we wanted to be back in Frankfurt before sunset.

This was a Schokokreppel with a chocolate cream filling. The term Kreppel may be a Hesse and Palatinate term, also called a Berliner (yes, JFK), Pfannkuchen, Krapfen and a Bismark some places in the US

Valentine’s Day donuts from Wawa! Because one can never have enough X and O. They also have some heart themed ones but I thought these were fun to share with my coworkers.

These letters remind me of Xando coffee shop that used to be in Dupont. Anyone remember them? The question was always whether the shop was called Xando or X and O. No ambiguity here.

Today being Ash Wednesday in addition to Valentine’s Day, I participated in gluttony yesterday at The Sugar Shack in Alexandria.

Honey lavender, party time, and king cake donuts sampled and brought home for the family.

What can I say? I like the texture of the Sugar Shack doughnuts better than District, and even more consistently than Astro. I also really like that they have a lavender doughnut. And even my son liked the king cake…

Last picture – a picture of determination to bike all the way back to College Park in damp, chilly weather after eating the honey lavender doughnut.

A Taunus snow ride in the midday drizzle to bad Homburg, Saalburg, and Oberursel stopping for coffee and a chocolate croissant at Café el Castillo in Oberursel, same place from early January where the Gamrin file was corrupted and would load into Strava so the manual ride did not count for #BAFS.

A late Saturday morning ride with no planned route. After a quick trip through the parks I headed out the Nidda to Harheim, but only found a Bäckerei chain (Siepler) I had already used. Back in Frankfurt I stopped at the Freud Backstube in Eckenheim for a coffee and an “oreo” doughnut with cream filling. here were no qualifying pastries available at Cinelli’s yesterday so I had a slice of cake with my cappuccino.

On today’s long ride in the sun, I stopped at Der Bäckerladen in Ginesheim on the Rhine. I had a Schokocroissant, but no coffee sice they were cleaning their machine as part of their closing procedure (it was 11:40 am, they closed at noon).

For my Presidents’ Day recovery ride I took out the Pugsley and rode around the Grüneburg and Nidda Parks. During my second pass through Niddapark I detoured over to Praunheim and stopped at Espressobar Manusco. I was there at 11 am and they close at 1 pm so my choices were limited. I had a Schweineohren with my coffee.

I was out getting splatted both before and after lunch in Grüneburg and Nidda Parks. Then I stopped at Café Clement in Eschersheim for coffee and a Berliner gefüllt mit Himbeere.

Sunrise through the parks before my flight. Stopped at Brot & Freunde in Dornbush near the end for an Illy coffee and Kristalzuckerdonut.

On my ride loop today I stopped at Hopscotch Coffee, not the one in Winchester who supplies Bikes & Coffee in Pucellville, but the one on the B-Line Trail in Bloomington, IN. Ejoyed a great cup of their Honduras Royal Reserve and a maple bacon doughnut.

Sunday morning three stop ride, two coffees, two doughnuts, and a krustada. The first stop was at the Crosstown Soma[/URL for a coffee an raspberry crostada (basically a tart so not qualifying for this category of pointless prize). Second stop was Cresent Donuts on Adams next to Rosehill Cemetery for a chocolate frosted cake doughnut. Third stop was at Rainbow Bakery on W 4th St where I had coffee and a grapefruit-poppyseed vegan doughnut.

Crosstown SOMA, this is across the street for the dorms I lived in my freshman year at IU. All of those WWII era residences have been replaced with much nicer quarters.

Cresent Donut, it’s been around forever and my ex-wife worked the overnight counter in the early 70s.
