Tuesday #fs2018donut ride. Again the only qualifying pastry was a Schokobrot. We stopped at the Café wewe on the Büchereibrücke in Bad Vilbel. The town’s public library is a bridge over the Nidda River and the café is part of that. Since we actually had sun for a change we sat at an outside table, In addition, I had coffee and a tomato and mozzarella panini while my two riding partners had kartoffelsuppe.

I pushed a little bit on today’s ride to complete both the Strava monthly distance and climbing challenges. It was drizzly and very windy and I was having trouble finding a bakery/coffee place where I hadn’t already used one of the chain. I finally found a Philippi’s Backstube in Windecken at mile 31 before the climb up to the Hohe Straße and home.

It’s Groundhog Day and no shadows were seen on today’s ride. I stopped for coffee and a doughnut at Der Vogelsbergbäcker in Karben at the halfway mark. This one may have qualified as swamp coffee since it was from a glass carafe on hot plate instead of fresh from a machine. It wasn’t overcooked, however.

Saturday back to Bad Homburg and Oberursel with Carlos. We stopped at the Schäfer dein Bäcker in Oberursel where I had the Kaffee Crema and a Schokobrötchen.

Doughneurers!
I am sure you anticipated this, but the next 2 significant holidays merit Doughnuts!
I am sure good donut seekers will find one or more doughnuts to recognize Mardi Gras and/or Valentines Day. Mardi Gras is Tuesday, February 13th, and Valentines Day is Wednesday, February 14th.
Pedal forth and find the yummiest, prettiest, or most appropriate commemorative doughnuts celebrating these holidays!
Go forth, find donuts, eat doughnuts, Enjoy!!

This morning, as a justification for leaving the house and going on a bike ride all alone (too early/cold for my wife or daughter), I agreed to bring home some donuts. For my morning tour, I made four different stops, mixing sweet and savory selections. Everything was consumed at home (which probably led to buying more than I maybe should have?)

1. Sugar Shack (Alexandria)

Since Sugar Shack opens the earliest, I made that my first stop. I started with a simple foursome. Clockwise from the top left: Twix, Chocolate cake, Maple Bacon, and “Mardi Gras” sprinkles.

2. District Doughnut (Barracks Row)

Next up on the way home was a quick stop at District Doughnut. Another foursome. Clockwise from the top left: Cannoli, Goodfellow, Everything Cream Cheese, and Chocolate Old Fashioned.

3. Dunkin’ Donuts (NoMA)

The ol’ standby – this is still our daughter’s favorite, as well as a good excuse to bide a little time until the last place opened. The top is the basic Double Chocolate. The bottom is the V-Day themed (and heart-shaped) Choc Full O’Love (chocolate frosted and filled).

4. B. Doughnut (Union Market)

I showed up a few minutes before their 9AM opening, and there already was a small line formed. On the left are the two sweet donuts (chocolate creme filled and chocolate glazed), and on the right are the two savory bagel donuts (everything w/chive and everything w/bacon).

As far as reviews: everything scored highly at home.

1. Of the various “Everything Bagel Donut with Cream Cheese and…” selections I got, I think my favorite was the Everything w/chive from B. Doughnut. The District one was a bit light on the cream cheese, and the bacon, though delicious, was just a little sprinkle on the very end.
2. Of the sweet ones I tried, I was pleasantly surprised by the Choc Full O’Love (I don’t think it’s supposed to have chocolate filling, but it was darn good), and the Maple Bacon is always a good one.
3. My wife enjoyed both the Twix and Cannoli doughnuts. She had low expectations for the Cannoli (she was underwhelmed by the Creme Brulee the last time she went to District), but she praised the authenticness of the filling.

After class and lunch, I did some dirtybiker loops in the parks and went looking for a café/bäckerei I haven’t used before. I ended up at Härdtlein on Hügelstraße on Ginnheim. A regular coffee and the doughnut had some pudding in it.

I admit. I’m a fan of the heart-shaped doughnuts that Dunkin comes out with this time of year, even though I’m not normally into fillings. And cannoli is one of my more favorite donuts from District, it’s true. Good choices!

Playing around on the Pugsley today looking for some snow to ride. I stopped at Das Waldtraut at Oberursel Hohemark next to the Tourist Information office. Just had a coffee and kept on riding uphill to the Römerkastell Saalburg. On the way down I stopped at Bäckerei Flach at the Europakreisel in Bad Homburg for my Mardi Gras doughnut (and another coffee, but doesn’t count since I already stopped at another Flach location.

Today I visited a location that I had meant to try last year during doughneuring. Paul in Bethesda at the top of the CCT. I tried two creations – both worth the trek. The first was a mini filled hazelnut. The Second was a franzipane with rum, although the receipt called it a King Cake…

Next in Georgetown at District Doughnut I had a chocolate-covered strawberry. District is all right, but something about their batter is meh. However, the frosting worked well with it, and it sort of tasted like fresh strawberries – so I was very happy.

On today’s Parks Loop I stopped at Bachbäcker on Grüneburgwg in Westend and had a coffee and Zimtschnecke (a glazed cinnamon roll, not gooey). I don’t know if that will qualify for this challenge.

Another donut parallax from yours truly. Green tea eclair cream puff (and not pictured, green tea ice cream puff too) from Beard Papa’s. There’s been not enough cream puffs in my life upon careful review.
