This is different than Coffeecatting, but could overlap with it to some degree. Here are the rules:

    1. The object is to visit as many DIFFERENT coffee places as possible (on your bike, of course!). But once you visit one place, that’s it. A second visit doesn’t count.

    2. Starbucks is verboten. But other chains, e.g., Peet’s, Cosi, etc., are fair game. However once you visit one chain outlet, that’s it. A visit to the same outlet but at a different location doesn’t count.

    3. “Swamp” coffee, e.g., 7-Eleven, Wawa, etc., is OK but subject to the same conditions as in #2 above. If accordioneur does his Swamp Coffee pointless prize http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?12642-FS-2018-Pointless-Prize-Thread&p=168809#post168809, there could be some overlap here.

    4. Bakeries, restaurants, and even fast food joints that serve coffee are also OK but subject to the same conditions as in #2 above.

    5. For your ride to count, use #FS2018coffeeride in your Strava ride title and include the name of the place you visited, e.g., #FS2018coffeeride Java Shack. Not required, but encouraged, is to also post pics on your Strava. And if you want to post your Strava ride link and pics on this thread for all to see, that would be fun too (but not required).

    6. The winner will be whoever has visited the most DIFFERENT coffee places.

    7. The tiebreaker will be whoever has visited the most coffee places on this venerated list:

    https://dc.eater.com/maps/best-coffee-shops-in-dc

    8. If needed, the second tie breaker will be whoever has visited the most “swamp coffee” places.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Get your caffeine game on!

Two rides today, both involved coffee, but I’ll call the first, Crumble, 50.a. This evening I went back out to join a friend and her friends at The Runcible Spoon just off campus in Bloomington, IN. That was 50.b. The coffee shop opened when I was an undergraduate at IU. The others were heading to the IU-OSU basketball game, but I stayed behind to have my qualifying beverage.

If you’re asking me if I’m willing to make outdoor coffee part of the challenge, the answer is “sorry, but no.” I know that’s part of Mary Gersemalina’s Coffeeneuring Challenge but I don’t want to include for this pointless prize. I know that’s an “arbitrary” decision (as is excluding Starbucks but allowing other chains, including “swamp coffee” such as 7-11), but we the makers of the pointless prizes are allowed to be arbitrary (and that’s sort of the point).

But if Great Eskape Café(TM) is a real brick and mortar place that serves coffee, then it counts for the challenge.

I was just rereading this. Does it have to be “brick and mortar” or do mobile coffee purveyors count? There are coffee food trucks (all over the place in Kyiv) a couple coffee buses (old London double deckers), and the Coffee-Bike in Frankfurt (which I have yet to see).

Second clarification question, do places that serve Starbuck$, but are not Starbuck$ (ie Best Buns) count?

It just keeps raining and raining and raining. I went out for this morning’s ride during the noon hour and stopped at The Inkwell on the Square for coffee. I was too wet and they were too busy for me to sit inside so I stood by my bike under their overhang to enjoy my hot beverage.

A “coffee truck” counts. Places like Best Buns that serve Starbucks are OK since they are not, by definition, Starbucks.

Coffeeride #52 Sunday morning three stop ride, two coffees, two doughnuts, and a Krustada. The first stop was at the Crosstown Soma[/URL for a coffee an raspberry crostada (basically a tart so not qualifying for this category of pointless prize). Second stop was Cresent Donuts on Adams next to Rosehill Cemetery for a chocolate frosted cake doughnut, but no coffee. Third stop was at Rainbow Bakery on W 4th St where I had coffee and a grapefruit-poppyseed vegan doughnut. Had the Phi Delt Little 500 team come up behind me on Covenanter as I was finishing my ride.

My freshman dorm was across the street from this small shopping center.

My first federal job was with SSA and one place I worked was across Rogers St behind me in this photo.

Today’s coffeeride had four stops where coffee flavored beverages were consumed. The first stop was at The Pourhouse Cafe on E Kirkwood where I got a larger than needed drip and drank it outside with my BBQ stromboli from Cafe Pizzeria across the street.

Today’s second coffeeride stop was at Bloomington Brewing Co on E 10th St in Crosstown where I had Java Porter as one of my six flight tastings (second from the right in the flight photo below left). I don’t know if this would have qualified as a standalone coffeeride, but it was made with Brown County (IN) coffee.

The third stop on today’s coffeeride was at Needmore Coffee Roasters on Pete Ellis Dr. The name is a nice play on words because of course we always need more coffee, but there are two Needmore hamlets near Bloomington. One is east on SR45 near the Monroe-Brown County line. The other is south on Old SR37 just inside over the Monroe-Lawrence Co line where there is also a brewery, Salt Creek Brewery. I had their Cowles Bog blend as a drip.

Today’s fourth coffeeride stop was at the Village Pantry (the 7-11 of Indiana) at E 3rd St and Jordan Ave since I was getting desperate to find a doughnut. They had espresso sized cups for a free sample of their Perfect Harvest Coffee Co drip.

My final Bloomington coffeeride for FS2018, now on to Arlington. This morning I headed to Jack’s Donuts, a fairly new establishment that I had tried to find on Saturday in the rain and missed because they have no sign on the main road, just in the strip mall. I had the house blend drip (they also offered espresso based drinks using a German machine) and a caramel-carrot cake doughnut and a Bavarian Cream Bismark/Berliner/Kreppel. Both were very yummy.

A three coffee ride, but I’m saving two in case I go back before I return to Germany. At the mid-way point of the ride I stopped at Bicycles & Coffee in Purcellville. I had intended to just get their drip, but they didn’t want to sell me one because it was to old. I settled for a very nice Americano. It turns out the shop has new owners as of this week and they are just getting settled. I wish them the best of luck!

The other two were Green Lizard and Best Buns.

Didn’t know they changed hands. Stopped there on a ride last fall.

Went to WTFCC at Whole Foods in Pentagon City for today’s coffee ride. It started to rain as Steve O and I left, so I bagged my plan for additional stops and headed home.

Riding in the “gentle” breezes along Fairfax Dr through Ballston and Virginia Square was certainly refreshing. I much prefered the Custis Trail even with the litter of tree debris, but I was not going to extend the ride. Good coffee at Northside Social in Clarendon.

That was windy. Friday Coffee Club’s 6th birthday celebration plus a flat white at the freshly renovated and reopened Swings
