Save the date! The FS Kickoff will be Thursday, Jan 8 at Capital City Brewing Co. in Shirlington, starting around 6 pm, though people may come earlier or later if they like. Cap City has been wonderful to our group, and offers several half price beers and appetizers on Thursdays.

Last year, we announced the team makeups at this event and posted them online that same evening. The happy hour isn’t mandatory, but is a great chance to meet some of your teammates and competitors, make plans (conspire?) and share information and tips. We’ll also present the Gold Nugget award to the person who rides the most miles on Jan 1, 2015.

Please let me know (if you can) whether you plan to join us!

A back story: I tried for a Crystal City venue thinking it might be a little easier for some people to ride to, but I could not find a suitable room for us (i.e., a separate room that doesn’t have five loud TVs blaring sports events). Cap City has ample car and bike parking and is very trail accessible. Bike and car parking info is in the diagram below. In addition, there are about 14 U-racks at the Shirlington Transit Station about a half block away on 31st Street.

No no no. My point is your panier is stuffed with cash and that’s why we love you. And to tie it bank to the thread, we want you to bring handups to the happy hour as pointless prizes.

    Handups=panniers stuffed with cash. FYI.

I think we need a beer summit to resolve this political fury. Um, oh I know, how about at the happy hour! And, um, all guys with paniers stuffed with cash are buying! ;)

(this is a joke. Had this been a real political discussion, I would sound like a moron and be completely unconvincing).

I’d love to oblige, but I took the rack off my bike and I’m not sure it’s going back on anytime soon. But if you’d like some cheap orange and blue pens, I’m your guy.

My point is that some of us enjoy this biking forum as a way to get away from political discussions and comments about peoples’ professions.

Also, it might be helpful if we can try to keep things on their relevant threads.

In that regard, does anyone want to offer to lead a convoy from DC to Shirlington for the happy hour?

On another topic, it’s a beautiful day. WSGFABR! (We should go for a bike ride!)

I’ll be biking to the happy hour from 17th street near the White House if anyone wants to ride with me! I’ll be on my heavy commuter bike that day so it won’t be too zippy of a pace. I’d also be happy to glom onto a larger convoy since I’ve never actually biked to Shirlington before. :)

Sweet I am so looking forward to getting mono again this year in late Jan and having my riding severely curtailed.

I’m flexible with when I leave, but I was thinking 5:30.

A convoy will come together – no worries. Sometimes it gets organized just a few days before the event. People usually meet near the bikeshare station at the base of the DC side of the 14th Street Bridge (just south of the Jefferson Memorial).

Do my best to be there (which means, probably not, but who knows.)

I have a 3:45 appointment that afternoon at the dentist to do prep work for a crown and some other gruesome thing that I forget so yeah, I’ll probably be in line for a good beer a couple hours later. I have never ridden my bike with alcohol in my system so I don’t know what that will be like. About 30 years ago I went on a run one hour after drinking a beer and it was the WORST run I ever had, without a doubt.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be heading out from DC and am happy to lead a convoy from the 14th St Bridge CaBi station. Once I’m sure I’m coming, I’ll provide some details.

I’m in – did I actually say that before? I will be coming from Tysons at about 5:30 or so and will hit Shirlington at about 6:30. If anyone wants to ride East, we could do the easiest possible convoy ever.

Count me in for convoying, mostly. I may bail at the last minute, because my 5-week tropical vacation has obliterated all my institutionalized knowledge re riding in this weather (and I’m rediscovering my leg muscles too).
