Save the date! The FS Kickoff will be Thursday, Jan 8 at Capital City Brewing Co. in Shirlington, starting around 6 pm, though people may come earlier or later if they like. Cap City has been wonderful to our group, and offers several half price beers and appetizers on Thursdays.

Last year, we announced the team makeups at this event and posted them online that same evening. The happy hour isn’t mandatory, but is a great chance to meet some of your teammates and competitors, make plans (conspire?) and share information and tips. We’ll also present the Gold Nugget award to the person who rides the most miles on Jan 1, 2015.

Please let me know (if you can) whether you plan to join us!

A back story: I tried for a Crystal City venue thinking it might be a little easier for some people to ride to, but I could not find a suitable room for us (i.e., a separate room that doesn’t have five loud TVs blaring sports events). Cap City has ample car and bike parking and is very trail accessible. Bike and car parking info is in the diagram below. In addition, there are about 14 U-racks at the Shirlington Transit Station about a half block away on 31st Street.

I’ll be there. Can you promise snow like last time?

Wheel get to show off our new Festivus Gifts! Do you think Santy Claus will bring me that new light I’m asking for? One as bright as Consular’s??

It still didn’t stop someone from turning right across his path at the W&OD crossing of George Mason.

I’ll never forget hearing about your Festivus wish list last year. Something about chains, whips, sheep and lube. What???! Or maybe it was a chain whip, anything Merino and chain lube. Something like that. ;)

Whee! This one doesn’t conflict with either my usual New Year’s celebration or the rehearsals for Julius Caesar, so I’m in!

Thanks for setting this up, Kathy! I’m looking forward to it. About the golden nugget… Will that go to the rider who rides the most miles on Jan 1 or the rider with the longest ride on Jan 1? Last year I thought it was to be the former but I was wrong. :p

Looking forward to the third year of frivolity and idiocy. I’ll be there.

I “should” be there. I have an appointment in Richmond at 2:00, but should be back in time to grab my bike and ride across the bridge by six.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone! :D

I’ll be at the happy hour too (my first). It will be a pretty decent ride back to my place in Woodley Park afterwards, but on the plus side, I will rack up some additional miles for my Freezing Saddles team!

I hope to be there, and my wife (shall I call her Queen of the Mark on this forum?) may come too.

For future events, the Highline RXR bar/restaurant is scheduled to open soon in Crystal City, in the former Bailey’s Pub & Grille space. Fortunately, they will not allow smoking in the new bar (unlike at Bailey’s, which is why I never went there, and apparently the smoking scared away enough people in general for them to go bankrupt). This is above McCormick & Schmick’s on Crystal Drive, just a block or two from the MVT connector and the Water Park.

I don’t know what the new place will look like. They will have TVs too, but I hope it’s not like Buffalo Wild Wings. They will have bar games like table shuffleboard, mini-basketball hoops and other games like they have at Penn Social and other bars (owned by the same group). They also plan to have live music on weekends, and open mic nights, solo performers, karaoke, etc. on other nights, depending on the permit situation.

Looks interesting enough to add to the general mix of happy hour bars, maybe.

(I’m not sure I’ll make this happy hour. Plus, I’m not signing up for Freezing Saddles. I’m just trespassing on this thread.)
