On the Strava comments thread, I nominated Laurie Lemieux for
    Best Alliterative Ride Title:
Misty, Moisty, Mostly through the Farms

Best ride titles (various categories) could be awarded. I volunteer to determine winners, but I am not going to read all the titles. You must send them to me at steve (at) offuttemail. I will collect them, keep them and determine awards. You may nominate others’, but not your own. I might, if I’m feeling democratic, put some out for comment or vote. Otherwise, I appoint myself Unassailable Czar of the ride title awards.

    Done. Unassailable Czar officially documented.

Nooner: Most rides during lunch hours (11am-2pm) during a weekday.

Oh, this one is MINE.* I think a bike themed lunch box might be a cool prize for this. Or, maybe, lunch. Someone can buy me lunch, somewhere tasty.

*(To win, I mean, not to award. I can’t be in charge of awarding it, as I will be winning it and that would just not look quite right.)

Last edited by acl; Today at 07:02 PM. Reason: oh, wait. I forgot about my team captain. This might not be mine.

    No it’s all you.

I’m not going to ride around when I get a break and I’m done eating and I’m bored, not with my pager accidentally turned to silent, not to Buzzards Point, where I get a phone call asking me if I copied the rush hatchback job, the truck call and the car job and I say “Uh no…” I got the rush done on time, but made the dumb mistake of picking up the TC before the CJ and by the time I’d dropped it and got to last pickup I was told that the client had picked it up herself because it took me so long to get there. So that was not good but I got lots of miles for the team lapping Hains and riding to Buzzard Point before I realized I was wanted at the office!

Haha. No I need to take it easy on the lunch rides. :P

What about an award for the 3rd placed rider in the 3rd placing team (or something nebulous like that). It’s difficult to target that goal but might make things interesting towards the end.

Maybe some donuts for whoever records the most Hains Pt laps (use Strava segment data – although those without a GPS would miss out.)

For the summer riding award, since I’m currently the only nominee I might as well rub it in:

Palm Beach in Sydney. Where Home & Away is filmed. It was between about 70-80F that day, but felt warmer in the sun.

Slight difference in bikes on show there. My riding pal had a lovely Fondriest. Mine is a factory direct model from Indonesia.

My entry will be a ride on either a Caribbean island or in Central America. I was thinking about putting those trip off, bt if there is a pointless prize on the line, I may just have to rethink that. :p

hmmm, i can’t quite compete with 1000 miles over the ocean, but according to Strava, I took a random dip in the potomac today. It was only about 35F out, that’s pretty suspicious!

So far I haven’t had any of these on Strava, but I have a ‘GPS verified’ track in another app wherein I traveled from Falls Church, VA to Dallas, TX and returned in something like 2 minutes, 35 seconds, while also riding from Fairfax to DC in about an hour and twenty minutes. Which begs the question: If I can travel at hypersonic speeds to and from Dallas, how come I can’t travel that fast on the W&OD?

That wormhole only took me as far as St Louis before kicking me back! At least it was on a straight line. ;)

Just bumping this up in case anyone would like to be in charge of a prize or two.

I will gladly donate one of my Handle Bar mustaches to the rider deemed most polite when encountering another rider not so polite… nominees must be suggested from the least polite folks on this forum!

Can we call the award the Dirt-y Moustache?

    Absolutely! Love it!

The Dirt-y Moustache has been added. I almost missed it, as my office building has lost its fiber connection and I have to come home to access the internet (or email, or lots of other things useful to actually doing my job, but whatever). I also put myself in charge of the Hains Point award, since I’m quite certain I won’t be winning that one; however, I will either need someone to data-mine Strava for this, or people will need to count their laps and nominate themselves.

acl (and anyone else feel free to weigh in) —

Is there an award that has been suggested, that you feel is crucial to the competition, for which no one has volunteered to be responsible?

I am willing to devise and create a suitable trophy, and will tabulate results to determine the winner. I just need a suggestion for a category.

    Thanks.

Right now there are only two awards
    * First Place
    * and promises of Bike Arlington goodies

People have talked about other pointless prizes…. but no one has stepped forward to do an award 100%. (in fact, we were just talking about that)

Okay, in the absence of any specific requests, I’ll make suggestions.

In furtherance of this being a team competition, I will create and award the following pointless prizes for TEAMS:

-The team with the most Hains Point laps — you will need to send me your individual results for the appropriate time period and I will hand tally them; there is no way I can get this from Strava myself being a non-techie person. Will send a reminder with a deadline later (unless you were going to do this award yourself, acl?)

    -Last place team

    Sounds good to me. Thanks!
