Hey Sarah – I’m bringing a car with goodies in the trunk as well. Do they generally leave the HP gates open on the weekends, or did you have to put in a special request to make sure you could get it down near the point? I guess worst case I can set up near the tennis courts or something, but if you know of a way to ensure the gates stay open then I can try and help coordinate.

Hi,
Great. The gates were wide open last year. Hopefully will be so this year too.
Thanks,
Sarah Bee

I think if someone tried to ask to have the gates left open, we’d end up with NPS kicking us out. The gates have been open the previous two years.
This. Ask not what NPS can do for you, because they won’t.

so I’m hoping I can make it for the last few minutes….
…and the totally awesome convoy ride home. Dirt – bring your music jams; that was the greatest midnight ride ever.

Got it. I just know when I ride there on weekdays before 6:30 AM, the gate is usually closed and figured that would be the case at night on weekends too. But dropping the question and won’t bother to ask.

ParticipantWe rode 5 laps starting at midnight on Jan 1. They closed the gate exactly as we completed the fifth lap.

ParticipantI hope to be there for at least part of it! When do people typically start showing up for this? We’re celebrating my husband’s birthday on Saturday so I’m going to try to sneak out… with cookies. :p

ParticipantHi all,
Unfortunately I woke up this morning with a wicked cold, and the flu has been going around my office…so things aren’t looking good for me tomorrow night. I’m very regretfully abdicating my hosting responsibilities for the evening. Are any friends/SO’s/grounded riders available to host? It looks like whunke/Billy is also hosting (woo!) and I’ll be sure to message folks involved to make sure all of the bases are covered.
So sorry to do this at the last minute! Enjoy the evening, and stay warm with the potential snow…quite the fitting send-off for this year’s Freezing Saddles!

“Typically?” This is only the 3rd time, and there were only 6 of us two years ago, so I’m not sure we have much of a sample set to work with.
In the past the FSLNHPP has been on a work day, so in general people would go home from work, eat, etc. and then come down, which was after 8 or 9 pm. This year, being on a Saturday, I suppose people could start showing up anytime in the late afternoon up until 11:53 pm (lookin’ at you, w&w). How long do you want to be cold and wet before we get to the toasting ceremony?
Get your husband to come down and help with the hosting (see urgent note above). We’ll sing happy birthday to him (and Judd, and Mary G, whose birthday starts at midnight).

ParticipantLooks like we’re going to have some very Freezing-Saddles-appropriate weather tomorrow night. Dress appropriately!

ParticipantIf anyone was planning some early pre-rain HP laps in the morning (like I was), it looks like a 10k race will have the road closed until 9:30am. http://www.active.com/washington-dc/running/distance-running-races/race-for-equal-justice-5k-10k-2016

ParticipantI’m back from my true Freezing Saddles final night ride (a couple laps around Lvivska Sq area), Weatherunderground had 30°F for my neighborhood weather station while the official Kyiv temperature was 26°F (windchill 18°F). We’d had some early morning snow that wasn’t completely melted off in areas that did not see the sun during the day.
I’m not sure I’m going to get up at 5 am so that I can get out and toast with you all at midnight EDT. Of course it’s supposed to be snow then so …

ParticipantHave fun I will toast from my couch! Finally warm again after the Nokesville Nomad, there is no way I’m venturing out again. Had planned to ride to DC from Nokesville, but the weather kicked my ass hard.

ParticipantI too have decided not to venture out again. I finally warmed up from my morning Port City ride and I’m horribly sleep deprived. Have fun!!!!

ParticipantAn informal tally shows the following teams had members rolling around HP tonight:
1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 & 20 Is there anyone we missed?A little snow was observed in headlamps. A shy moon peeked through cloud cover a couple times. Temps did not disappoint on this final eve of BAFS2016.
Thanks Bike Arlington for a great game! Elsewhere I saw someone observing the significant increase in winter biking around DC, and crediting BAFS!
