Based on prior years can you provide an estimate of how many riders may be at the HP event, not sure what I will bring but just trying to figure out how much of anything to bring.
Thanks
We had 40-50 total last year, I think. With a much larger total participation and this being the third annual, I’d expect more than that, but it’s hard to say.

In addition, this will be the first time that it has been on a weekend, so I think the totals will definitely be larger than the previous years.
For myself, this will be my first time attending, since my work schedule does not allow me to be out super late on week nights.

ParticipantOh, right, I forget that other people need sleep to function at work.

It’s only 10 days away. I wrote in my original post:
Feel free to help in some way to make this a fun and successful event. Some ideas include:
- Recruit your friend/SO/relative as suggested above
- Bring a folding table/tent, chairs, etc. to make the social center more “homey”
- Bring some sort of music setup to add to the fun atmosphere
- Bring snacks or beverages to share
- Volunteer to be the “official” photographer
- Bring noisemakers or funny hats for the toast
- Other?
Freezing Saddles is a grass roots, shared experience, built on volunteers. There are 250 participants with maybe 20 of us pulling most of the weight. Spread the word to your teammates that they are encouraged to help with this (or the final HH, or anything else, for that matter). Captains, in particular, reach out to your teams to let them know about the FSLNHPP and also to encourage them to do more than just freeload. It’s part of the game.
My girlfriend said she’s interested in volunteering Saturday night. She’ll likely bring her bike to ride some laps with me and then set up an area for snacks, drinks, hanging out, etc. We’ll make a Costco run prior to HP to grab some items. If anyone else wants to contribute though, let me know. We’ll be happy to transport some supplies (note SOME b/c vehicle interior and trunk space is limited) if anyone wants to drop them off at my place beforehand (Shirlington area), or people can leave things with us at HP while they’re out riding as well. Just PM me if you’d like to coordinate on anything. Looking forward to a successful FS end celebration!

leave it to Rod to come up with a route 147 miles, to go about 35 miles as the crow flies (of course crows generally don’t have to worry about getting run over by cars).

ParticipantA lot of gravel on this route, Bob. Bring your cross bike.

ParticipantWell, the extended forecast in the DC metro area looks fine for a lot of riding, but cooler than what you’ve been having. If you want a real end to winter, come ride with me in Kyiv, we’ve got a 50% chance of some light snow about the time things are wrapping up at Hains Point and we’ll be about 15 degrees cooler (fahrenheit).
We’re getting close enough that the weather forecast might be somewhat accurate and it’s looking like I may be the only BAFS participant actually riding a freezing saddle on the last day of the competition. The current Kyiv forecast is for temperatures below freezing from from midnight to midnight on Saturday, March 19 with a slight chance of snow showers early and late.

I managed to stretch out my achilles tendon biking on the Blueridge parkway (sorry for dropping out, Team 2!), so I’m free to be at Hanes point from the afternoon into the evening. Boot and all. When should I get there? What can I bring? Who should I be looking out for? I’ll do whatever, just let me know!
Hey Cmcmackin87,
Sorry to hear about your Achilles. Did the same thing last year. I got there at the beginning of the ride, set up the snack station at the end of the point where I parked my car, staged all the food out of my trunk, and blasted the radio all night. I brought typical supported ride snack items, but cookies, brownies, Gatorade, fruit, crackers, chips, hummus, etc. were a big hit. No one drank any of the wine I brought and only one or two people cracked open a beer. I will be there with some snacks this year as well, although I will be towing them from the back of my bike. So, look for me on the bike pulling the trailer with Christmas lights. Thanks for volunteering & see you there!
Warmly,
Sarah Bee

Hey Sarah – I’m bringing a car with goodies in the trunk as well. Do they generally leave the HP gates open on the weekends, or did you have to put in a special request to make sure you could get it down near the point? I guess worst case I can set up near the tennis courts or something, but if you know of a way to ensure the gates stay open then I can try and help coordinate.

ParticipantI think if someone tried to ask to have the gates left open, we’d end up with NPS kicking us out. The gates have been open the previous two years.

ParticipantSave a sip of lemonade for me! My 14-year-old has her gymnastics state championship in Richmond on Saturday evening (double flips, etc…). Assuming all goes smoothly, we’ll be home by 11 pm at which point I will ride immediately to HP. Last year’s FSLNHPP was a blast, so I’m hoping I can make it for the last few minutes….
