However, as chris_s points out, the winner is determined after the plane takes off (with him in it), so there is still a slim chance someone else could win. He could miss his flight, for instance. Or weather could close the airport and he could opt to fly out the next day. Etc.

According to flightaware.com, Lufthansa 419 departed Dulles at 6:50 PM, 45 minutes late. Unless someone has evidence otherwise, I am under the impression our consularrider colleague is on that plane.
