ParticipantThis is what Freezing Saddles has done to my brain:
Six months ago, if you had asked me the lowest temperature I would ride in, I would have said, “Fifty degrees.”
Today, when I saw that the temperature hit forty degrees, my first thought was, “Sweet! That’s warm! I can’t wait to get out and ride.”

The dark, cold, wet, salty, windy, snowy, sleety, people looking at you like you are nuts, side.
Sunrise, crisp night air with a full moon casting everything in 1948 movie tone, all the sights and sounds normaly lost inside a car. peppered with a sprinkle of excitement now and then. ( intended or not)

On Thursday when I got up to go biking, my phone said the temperature was 13 degrees. Thinking maybe it had just not updated since the coldest part of the night, I refreshed it. It then said 11 degrees. And my first thought was, “Darn! It has to be under 10 degrees before I can win a bicycle icicle!”

ParticipantSeeing this makes me wonder what the calculation is. rcannon’s ridden a total of 61 miles so far this year. So if his average speed is 72mph, his total time should be just under an hour. But when I look at his strava feed, his total time this year is about 6 1/2 hours. That should make his average speed a little under 10mph. But it’s still showing more than 60mph.
Does the algorithm average the speeds of the rides (e.g., I do a 1 mile ride at 20mph and a 19 mile ride at 10mph = average 15)? Or does it calculate total distance divided by total time, which is the correct way (1 mile at 20 + 19 miles at 10 = avg. speed 10.256).

Looks like this is pretty easy to game. rcannon’s a slowpoke compared to me!

ParticipantIt does it the wrong way. Sue hozn.
The problem is that RCannon’s ride titled “Neighbors Are Going to Wonder While I Keep Doing Circles for 5 Minutes Daily” is in the database as an average speed of over 550 miles per hour since he claims to have done 1.1 miles in seven seconds. That’s throwing off his average.

Yes, but even if he really did do that ride in 7 seconds, his average speed for 2015 is still under 10 mph, because the ride represents less than 2% of his total miles.

Just remember that there can be consequences for messing with the guy with the database login credentials.
