Participant7th isn’t bad at all. Took it from the Mall to Mt. Vernon Square this morning and it was mostly clear with some slush here and there.

Great, thanks for the update. I’m sure drivers will be respecting the bike/bus only lane this afternoon, right?

I almost spat out my hot chocolate from laughing there. Most people have been quasi-considerate due to the conditions, but I did have an angry motorist in a German luxury vehicle honking his horn and driving aggressively around me (I was in the Bike/Bus lane). Never ceases to amaze me the calculus (or lack thereof) that must go on in the motorist’s head … “to save 30 seconds on my commute, it is acceptable to kill or injure a cyclist” … of course, if he actually did that, the time in court would greatly outweigh 30 seconds, but since he overpaid for a mode of transportation, other road users rights are nullified …

ParticipantI had a guy behind me at a light roll down his window to tell me to get in a bike lane. I turned around and told him I was in a bike lane and pointed to the sign. He looked at it, rolled up the window, and left me alone. That was fun.

Calculus is way too advanced for most of these types. Basic arithmetic is probably a stretch for some of them.

Case in point.

ParticipantI think I read somewhere that driving in the Bike/Bus lanes can merit a $100 fine. It would be nice if DCPD were to actually enforce that, both for the intended users of that lane and the coffers of the District. I think I’d be more likely to see the 14th Street Bridge Active Transportation Lane plowed first …

My favorite is when I ride past the Verizon Center, where it seems DCPD just hangs out and watches the world go by, and there are 8 cars in the lane. They could just walk out into the street at every red light cycle and write a few tickets. Maybe next time I go by I’ll offer to stand in line at Chipotle for them if they’ll pull over a few people at the light. Seems like a win-win.

ParticipantMy understanding is that the bus/bike lane by MCI doesn’t actually have law behind it to enforce.

Shouldn’t there be a “failure to obey traffic signs or signals” law to fall back on?

“I didn’t see ’em.”
Seems to be a legally valid legal defense for motorists. If it gets em out of manslaughter cases, it will surely excuse them from being in the wrong lane.

Not if it isn’t a legal sign.

ParticipantThe bigger problem is that jrenaut is likely not eligible for the LEO discount that Chipotle offers and the reason why they are all there. So ordering for them is unlikely to help.
I drove home along my bike commute route. I’m hosed for at least a day or two, probably all week given the temps. Half the roads were never touched. Pounded down snow/ice everywhere that will freeze solid over the next few days. Awesome job Fairfax County.
Going to need to figure out where and when I can get my sleaze rides in.

Arlington is not looking much better. I justified my 1.1 mile sleaze ride today as a recon for tomorrow. With the amount of slush and hard packed icy snow and a night as cold as forecast, there is NO WAY I am getting out on those roads tomorrow. Well, at least not for a commute… maybe for a short leg stretcher of 1 to 1.2 miles just to keep the circulation going.

I will cover the difference if it means they enforce the sign (legal or not).
