A few bike-related public meetings coming up:
Planning Meeting #2 for “South Park”
This park, at the top of the Lombard Zig Zag will contain the “real” trail connection from Four Mile Run Trail up to street level. The current plans show it connecting up to the Route 1 side, not the Potomac Ave side. Is that really the best option? And how will this trail connection work once Alexandria is done building out Potomac Yard and the Potomac Yard Trail is on the East side of Potomac Ave rather than its current interim alignment? Will the park have a water fountain? A place to rest? A bike fix-it station? Make your voice heard on these and other issues.Wednesday March 29th, 2017 7pm-9:30pm
Gunston Community Center
2700 South Lang Street, Arlington, VA 22206Benjamin Banneker Park Project meeting #2
This project will, among other things, redesign and reconstruct the W&OD Trail through Benjamin Banneker Park. There is some thinking that this project may set the standards for trail design county-wide as well. The first meeting was attended primarily by neighbors angry about how cyclists travel along their neighborhood streets once they leave the park. What is the best alignment for the trail in the park? What should the ultimate goal be for routing the W&OD through the East Falls Church Metro area? How wide should the trail be and how close is too close for planting trees to the trail? Make your voice heard on these and other issues.Tuesday April 4th, 2017 7pm-9pm
Tuckahoe Elementary School – Cafeteria
6550 N. 26th Street, Arlington, VA12th Street Complete Streets Project – Ask the Project Team Meeting
This project’s primary goal is to extend the dedicated bus lanes of the Crystal City Transitway toward Pentagon City along 12th Street. In addition to that, it will build a critical link between two future Protected Bike Lanes and some existing regular bike lanes. It will build a short piece of two-way protected bike along 12th Street beneath the Route 1 overpass that will connect the future Army Navy Drive PBL, the future Clark St PBL, and the existing Long Bridge Drive bike lanes. This piece of PBL is at a crossroads where cyclists may be going any number of different ways. Does the design have proper queuing space such that cyclists waiting to turn aren’t impeding cyclists who are continuing straight, etc? Is it designed in a way that will minimize conflict with pedestrians? Is it really not possible to get any other bike facilities onto 12th Street as part of this project?Wednesday April 5th, 2017 3pm-6pm (that’s not a typo, it’s like a happy hour meeting or something)
“The Connection: Crystal City” (a pop-up library in the Crystal City Underground)

W&OD Trail Bridge Public Workshop
As part of widening I-66 inside the Beltway, VDOT has offered to build a bridge over Lee Highway for the W&OD trail (so they can move cars faster through the area, naturally). The neighborhood response to the concept renderings of the trail bridge nearly sank the project, but some last-minute advocacy seems to have saved it. The steeper the approaches, the less visually imposing the bridge can be, but the tougher it is to use as a cyclist. Come out and make sure VDOT is taking into account the experience of using the bridge – will it be easy to use? safe to use? enjoyable to use? – and not just the aesthetics when viewed from down the street.Wednesday April 5th, 2017 6pm-8pm
