ParticipantI’ve noticed that on the Alexandria side of 4MR that there seems to be a significant number of aimless walkers who act like they aren’t expecting bikes or any other traffic that cross paths with them. It’s not a place to try and ride fast.

Correct. Leave these in place and add some English language versions.
FYI, Alexandria staff say that the signage was a response to complaints received.
I saw an English language one this morning on the post at the Mt Vernon bridge heading in towards Arlington.

ParticipantThis morning we rode Glebe from right after Arlington Ridge all the way to Eads and it was fine. I assume this is what everyone who is coming from the west is doing now, right?

Psychopath. That route is certain death. There are cars.

Holiday week and traffic is way down from normal.
AND…detour adds a half mile to my commute each way, meaning I get an extra 50 miles or so for BAFS2017 by taking the detour. Win.

Was Nov. 8 a holiday week? Must have missed that, as Glebe traffic seemed much the same both days.

OR you could skip all that garbage and just do an 80 mile ride with me again on the last day of BAFS! Win-Win!

November 8th was election day, and ironically, on the same date in 1923 Hitler led his Beer Hall Putsch in Berlin.
It is also the day of observance of, among other things, the Four Crowned Martyrs, which I am certain significantly influenced traffic patterns.

And today there’s only one remaining, a Spanish language sign. I wonder what’s happening to them, as the restoration project signs don’t seem to be disappearing. Is someone preparing to make some fenders and panniers?

ParticipantDoes anyone know how we go about getting the lights fixed on the baseball field side of the pedestrian bridge? There are a lot of lights out, but this one in particular is problematic. If you’re heading west bound on the detour, you have a fairly sharp right turn onto the pedestrian bridge and the light at that corner is out, effectively making it a blind corner at night. The trail is sparsely populated at night now that it’s cold, but if we get some nice weather, who knows.
The light pole in question doesn’t seem to have one of those ID tags on it.It has some weathered ‘caution tape’ where I would expect the ID tag to be.

ParticipantHey I came up with a fun detour for folks heading west in the afternoon that doesn’t put you on Glebe Road. The advantage of 20th street is that there is little traffic, and the few stop signs are 4-way (as opposed to 23rd street where many cross streets don’t stop).
When you come off of MVT and through the CC Connector, take a left onto crystal drive and then an immediate right and straight up 18th.
You’ll go through 2 lights and then left on Fern. Take a right on 20th, toodle along, crank up the hill. Set a PR.
When you get to the top of 20th, cross Arlington Ridge/take a left in one of the crosswalks (unless there is no traffic, then just take a left on Arlington Ridge). Once on Arlington Ridge, ride with traffic until you hit the light, then take the lane all the way down the hill until the split – where you stay right (onto S. Lang St.) (Note: Arlington Ridge Rd is in fantastic shape. You can probably close your eyes during this portion.)
Continue downhill on S. Lang St. as you pass Gunston MS on your right, then turn right on 28th St. That will take you behind the Giant shopping center. Take a left at your first stop sign onto S. Meade St.
Cross Glebe at the light and immediately turn right onto 4MR trail. Profit.

In just 15 simple steps, you too can avoid Glebe Road.

Well some people claimed Glebe Rd is Certain Death, and this route is actually much simpler than the county’s inane detour.
