I always assumed you were naming yourself after Vassago’s iconic 29er. I love that wet cat geometry. The poem is pretty awesome too.

I’ve wondered whether your forum name was related to the surreal and bizarre Frank Zappa song “Ya Hozna” on his “Them or Us” album. The song is a repetitive basic electric guitar pattern with vocals from three of his other songs, only the vocals are played backward. (Those other songs are “Sofa No. 2” “Lonely Little Girl” and “Valley Girl” according to what I’ve just read. Yes, Zappa was a strange guy.)

I would post the video, but the two YouTube videos I found are quite strange, befitting the song. One includes clay figures that morph into various shapes and features, including some that are not family-friendly. Those who are curious about it can find it with a search for “ya hozna.”

We had a similar discussion long ago on one of the buried pages of OneEighth Sighting thread (yeah, forums suck for finding things).

    I wrote then:

So, the story behind the name … in 8th grade I was a very shy kid, just back in the US (MN) from 8 years in Madagascar and I had to give a presentation in my English class. I went to the front of the class, but before I could start several of the kids started asking “How do you spell your name, anyway!?”. I may not have been a fan of my name as a kid, but I still thought the question was ridiculous. So I wrote “Hozn” on the board. It kinda stuck as a written (but not really spoken) nickname. So I just pronounce it “Hans” :)

But my favorite is rcannon100’s reading it as “horizon”. I might rewrite history to make that part of the story. Maybe blending the meaning behind transliterated Arabic word (e.g. the “hozn” of hozn.com) with an imagery a sunset. Jan de Hartog ends his “A Sailor’s Life” with a piece describing how to paint a sunset — the capstone is the little brush strokes of black to paint the ship disappearing from sight. This feels like the best possible meaning to ascribe to that juvenile act of awkward shyness :-)

Mine was pretty straight forward, a combination of my former occupation and my avocation (plus they match my real world initials).

Kalman Sunset is OK, though my middle name is admittedly a little different. (It was my Hungarian great grandfather’s name.)

But the alternate porn name game of first pet’s name plus street you grew up on yields a pretty rockin’ porn name for me: Thunder Sunset. :D

Boring. I think I’ll change it.

ok, seriously, how do you change your forum name? I can’t find an edit for that– and I already changed my strava name so they’d match and I’d be (hopefully) less confusing to my forum friends!!!

Although some have asked if my screen name means I work at National Airport, I chose DCA (in addition to my first name) to indicate that I like aviation and my favorite local airport code makes it obvious that I live in DC.

A patently ridiculous and embarrassing forum name for the rest of eternity, obviously.

    Another boring one…

“Alcova Heights” is a neighborhood in Arlington, where I moved last summer (west of Glebe and between 50 and Columbia Pike).

Mine is the last two syllables of my last name. For some reason, some of my childhood friends had difficulty pronouncing my last name, Varuolo (the u is silent), so rolo was appointed to me as a nickname.

    An alternate payment arrangement?

Mine is “the G” in German. I lived in Germany when I first discovered the need for screen names, and G has always been a nickname.
