The tow truck driver “said that if there was a sign marking the pedestrian pathway, he didn’t see it.”
This seems to be the path entrance in question.

Participantthat looks to me like exactly where he was stuck. Backup out of street view and moving south a bit, you can almost see how it could be mistaken for an access road of some sort… if you’re half blind…. and 87… driving an old toyota with dirty windows.

I see how you could drive up to the trailhead and say “hmmm, clearly this isn’t a road, guess I’ll turn around”, but I’m betting he just said “screw it…I’m old and I’ll do whatever the hell I want!”

Nah, probably just got on the path from the apaptly named “Lucky” Drive where there is no barrier or signage. Note the dirt track down to the water on the left, he could have just as easyily have ened up drowned!

ParticipantThe trail needs a bollard! As an act of charity, I think the citizens of Arlington should send them one of our’s.
We really need to look deep into our soul’s on this one.
Let’s send them a bollard, tis the season after all.

It would have had to have been one of the old style (or maybe one of the many surplus ones around the Wilson Bridge?) since the new ones would just bend over.
