My spouse (aka Lady Action Wipes) and I have been enjoying the new cookbook by Dr. Allen Lim and chef Biju Thomas that was recently published by VeloPress. They have been cooking for racing teams, but their ideas seem to be practical for many riders, even those of use who don’t burn 6,000 calories a ride!

Velonews has also been doing some videos with the authors, including some cooking ones.

I like how riding every day has helped me slim down some, and I noticed that the amazing CCrew mentioned that riding has helped him lose a lot of weight and control his diabetes.

One of the nice things about riding a lot has been that I eat all the time now, often 5 or 6 times a day. That has really helped me I think. When I eat too much at any one time, that sort of causes me to crash afterwards, and then I don’t ride so well on the way home (or the next day). It’s almost as if the riding is forcing my body to make me eat more sensibly or else!

One of the nice things about the cookbook is they sort of steer away from processed bars and gels toward fresh food. We’re still experimenting with Dr. Lim’s ricecakes to get the consistency just right, but they do taste better than Clif bars. Another nice thing is that the cookbook emphasizes easy stuff, and ingredients that are readily available. Their idea was the the racers would ride better if they learned to cook good food for themselves, so they kept it simple.

Anyway, I hope these links are helpful (good present idea, by the way!), and I’d be curious what others do to keep well fed.

If you show up for the Tim Johnson Ride on Washington Day 5 festivities in Baltimore or College park, you can actually meet these two folks. They are cooking for us on this trip.

Whoa! That’s awesome. Famous cyclists is one thing, but celebrity chefs? Now we’re talking!

Found this on the Skratch Labs blog — Dr. Lim explaining his hydration and food programs from TJROW:

    I beg to differ.

Yes, the pictures in the cookbook are lovely. Perhaps some day…

I tried to make the date bars, and they came out all wrong. maybe it was b/c i had slivered almonds, but it never really solidified. Do you have a favorite ‘portable’ from the book, yet?
