My spouse (aka Lady Action Wipes) and I have been enjoying the new cookbook by Dr. Allen Lim and chef Biju Thomas that was recently published by VeloPress. They have been cooking for racing teams, but their ideas seem to be practical for many riders, even those of use who don’t burn 6,000 calories a ride!

Velonews has also been doing some videos with the authors, including some cooking ones.

I like how riding every day has helped me slim down some, and I noticed that the amazing CCrew mentioned that riding has helped him lose a lot of weight and control his diabetes.

One of the nice things about riding a lot has been that I eat all the time now, often 5 or 6 times a day. That has really helped me I think. When I eat too much at any one time, that sort of causes me to crash afterwards, and then I don’t ride so well on the way home (or the next day). It’s almost as if the riding is forcing my body to make me eat more sensibly or else!

One of the nice things about the cookbook is they sort of steer away from processed bars and gels toward fresh food. We’re still experimenting with Dr. Lim’s ricecakes to get the consistency just right, but they do taste better than Clif bars. Another nice thing is that the cookbook emphasizes easy stuff, and ingredients that are readily available. Their idea was the the racers would ride better if they learned to cook good food for themselves, so they kept it simple.

Anyway, I hope these links are helpful (good present idea, by the way!), and I’d be curious what others do to keep well fed.

I like my vices. Why do you think I bike?

Actually, the rice cakes are loaded with eggs and bacon and brown sugar! It’s funny to read in spots — they’re trying to cram as many calories and nutrients into the racers as possible without making them puke! Sort of a different perspective from most diet literature.

To the real topic – Honey Stinger Waffles are the Flying Spaghetti Monster’s most perfect creation on this Earth. I love those to the point that I’ll go do something outdoors as an excuse to eat another one because I feel bad just grabbing them out of the cupboard.

Ditto! Albeit, I still think a glass of beer actually DOES help with recovery. Especially if it is homebrew.

I got a copy of the cookbook for Christmas, and just made a batch of the fig bars. I took one with me exploring the Custis, and ate it by a stream just after the start of the W&OD.

    1) It was a delightful snack.
    2) I have new respect for all of you who commute from Arlington and beyond. I didn’t realize the Custis was uphill from Georgetown to Falls Church. That must suck on a crummy Friday evening.

Once it’s a regular thing, you come to love the hills, and sometimes don’t even notice!

Sometimes when I ride to work in the morning I start thinking about the hill I have to go up right before I get home.

    Yes, she does now….:o
I am a big fan of action wipes (no shower at work), and of the new cookbook. Best pizza dough ever!

The last mile of my commute used to be an 8% grade climb, so hills between DC and Falls Church really aren’t so bad. Don’t ask me to go back to SF to try those hills again now, I’d get crushed.

The last 1/4 mile of my commute now into work is an 8% grade, it’s why I don’t ride in work clothes for more of the year. Once it gets much above 60 I’m going to be a sweaty mess when I get in unless I submit to the lycra and shower at work. Thankfully I have that option, it’s just easier to ride in work clothes.

Also I’ve been meaning to buy Dr. Lim’s book, and knowing there’s a pizza dough recipe in there gives me just that last kick in the ass to do so.

I usually have a count in my head of how many hills there are before I get home and always feel a strange mix of sadness/elation when there’s only a few more left.
