The last time I had a flat near there, I just jogged it to a bike shop, but I have to agree that the many offers of assistance are very nice indeed.

And now, the rest of the story.

Before leaving work on Tuesday, I decided to add some air to my front tire. Using a floor pump that I had at the office, I quickly got the front tire up to 80 psi and was ready to roll. Unfortunately, I got all of a mile from work (and the nearby Pentagon City Hudson Trail Outfitters) when my front tire went flat. Apparently, I had a slow leak that was exacerbated by the extra air I had added. Having used up my spare tube and last patch in the morning, my only recourse was to turn around and head back to HTO to purchase a new tube. I pumped up the front tire and held my breath that I could make it make to the store. As luck would have it, I did just make it to the store.:D A new tube was purchased and I quickly changed the tire. My lesson from this little exercise is to carry a new tube, as my spare and to ensure an adequate supply of patches to make repairs on the road. The tube that bedeviled has been consigned to my bag of tubes to recycle.

    Where do you recycle tubes?

    Do they take tires, too?

If they don’t, give it to Pheonix Bikes for art projects.

Good to know. I have hoarded them and have at least five or six at home. I keep meaning to figure out how to recycle them or find some other way for them to be useful to someone. Might have to plan a weekend ride that takes me past Phoenix soon so I can dispose if them. Thanks!

Spokes does not recycle tires, just tubes.

Now that you mention it, I do vaguely remember seeing a sign by the service desk, but it did not appear to be for customers, but rather reminding the wrenches. I also vaguely remember that it wasn’t all types/sizes of tubes. I need some new chain lube and spare tubes, so maybe I’ll stop in and ask.

Thanks. Follow up question then to everyone — Besides Phoenix Bikes using them for art projects, is there any place to recycle bike tires? Or is it not worth the effort for anyone involved since they don’t have the same steel banding as automotive radial tires?

I’ve thrown out a few before, but I just feel guilty doing so. One of the many reasons I ride my bike is out of environmental concern, and just tossing tires in the dumpster seems wrong somehow.
