ParticipantMine has been doing the same thing for a few months now – usually when I’m on longer rides or started and stopped the timer a few times. It will eventually register my touch correctly after turning it on a off several times over several hours. Following…

Sort of urgent – the touchscreen on my Garmin 510 is completely non-functional. Every once in a while it registers that you’ve touched it, but it always thinks you touched the bottom right. I know the long term solution is to send it back to Garmin, but let’s say I’m leaving at 4am tomorrow morning for a week of bikes and beers in Michigan and don’t want to have to make the entire week a continuous ride that I hope to upload later.
Any advice?
Short term solution – use your cell phone to track Strava? Borrow a device from a friend?
Less ethical (non)advise: Buy a garmin or similar tracking device from Costco/REI/somewhere and return it after you return? (Don’t actually do this)

ParticipantDoesn’t seem to have much to do with longer rides. I do a lot of short 1-3 mile things for work/errands/etc and it often is a problem then. The time it just recently bonked was 12 miles, which is longer than my average but not what I’d call long.
I can use my phone but we’re going to be traveling so I want to make sure i have phone battery for emergencies/maps/etc.

Get some USB rechargeable battery packs.

ParticipantIf you’ve had for under a year, you may be able to return it to the store if you bought it locally.

Purchased April 2015 from Amazon, unfortunately.

ParticipantI have a 510 in my drawer I’ll sell you for $40 … But I will warn you that Steve O had an issue with it when he borrowed it (last year?). I did a full factory reset and used it for a few rides without issue, but it is only my backup device so it does not get regular use.

ParticipantIt’s not helpful short term, but after I tweeted in sadness about my 2 year old vivoactive watch malfunctioning, Garmin replaced it for free with a refurbished one, even though it was well outside of the warranty period.
Oh, and I’m in Michigan too right now

If I’m getting another GPS, I’m going to shoot for turn-by-turn. And I’m not getting out your way tonight. But thanks for the offer.

I will try tweeting at them. And if you go anywhere near any breweries in the northern part of the lower peninsula we might run into you…

You know…the Wahoo Elemnt does turn-by-turn directions (through the phone app)…

ParticipantYeah, the Garmin 510 does turn-by-turn too (if using a TCX file with street names like from RWGPS), though it isn’t a nice as a unit that has maps knowledge built in.
I’d get a Wahoo.

ParticipantWhile I got nothing for jrenaut, in a few weeks I may be able to recommend a place to get a Garmin fixed. Just sent my 800 to FixYourGPS to repair (for $58) the rubber back and power switch. He apparently runs a Garmin boneyard and uses those parts for repairs.
I tried to send it to Garmin for repair but after playing 20 questions on their website, their computer said it wasn’t interested in fixing my Garmin.
Would have purchased a new 820 but it seems I would have had to buy new speed and cadence sensors as well. Tonight’s task is to install the app on my phone.

So LhasaCM, who is a glorious human being, dropped off his Wahoo Elemnt that he’s not using. In two minutes of pairing it with my phone, I want to find whoever writes Garmin’s software and throttle them. I haven’t used it on a ride yet, but if pairing my phone is any indication, I’m probably a convert. I’ll check back in Friday after we toodle around Mackinaw Island in preparation for our (relatively) big Saturday and Sunday rides.

I can +1 that LhasaCM is a glorious human being.
