ParticipantWhile biking down Kenmore heading towards Shirlington my google maps told me to “veer left towards Shirlington Rd”. That’s when I encountered the street sign at this intersection:

Not helpful Arlington. Not helpful.

Must be some serious warping of the space-time continuum in that region because the intersection of Glebe and Glebe is in the same neighborhood, isn’t it?

ParticipantYou all do understand the origins of all this dont you. Recall, if you will, that Arlington is the home of the Pentagon. The Pentagon was constructed during of course WWII. And as much as the country was engaged in total warfare, everyone had their eyes on the next war. The Chinese were of course hoarding all the weapons we shipped them in order to fight off (unsuccessfully) the Chinese Communists. And we were busy preparing for the Cold War. So when it came time for urban planning in Arlington, when we planned this fundamentally WWII and post WWII community – previously it being pretty much dairy farms and cherry orchards – we designed a system of streets and bridges to no where to ensure that if the soviets ever did invade and advance on the pentagon, they would get lost on the corner of Vacation, Vermont and Vernon.

I’m from Charlotte. This may be while I feel at home in Arlington.
