How about instead of depositing a nice 12 oz bottle to sit in the 90F heat and not be very appetizing to the finder if and when it is actually found we do a photo pint relay. Here’s how it could work:
Let’s say Shawn (since he brought this to our attention) rides his bike out to some choice location, orders a frosty beverage of higher caliber and without any other description of the event posts a picture of said beverage himself and his surroundings on a suitable public forum, say this one. And then we dedicated readers could view said photo, guess the location and the beverage of choice, and then try to recreate the endeavor. The first person to post a picture depicting the same scene, and listing the location, and beverage in the comments of this blog would win the prize of picking the next location/libation.
Possible rules could be, photo must recreate scene as much as possible – If a pair of riders enjoy a Stout at Capital City Brewery on the patio, then the winning photo should include 2 people, 2 stouts, etc. . . bonus points for attention to detail (fake mustaches, correct gender, etc).
Any takers? Shawn you go first.

ParticipantThe problem with Mikey’s plan is Strava — half of us know where the other half has ridden at all times.

That’s fine, you could use this as a sort of diversion, plus most of us are not going to search back through a few days of strava results for someone else to figure it out, we will try to go from the picture. If you post a picture of one of your beer runs, in the morning, it would be funny to see how quickly someone posts a response (I wouldn’t be surprised with a lunch time response photo). The fun is in the recreation, The location guessing is only part of it.
That and you could “turn off Strava” from time to time. 8-|

That was my immediate thought as well.

ParticipantThis is basically geocaching (which can be a pretty fun cycling activity) where the beer is the swag

ParticipantOohh this sounds neat. I’d be in. The extreme Heffe we bottled over the weekend (8.5% – almost a barlywine) still has 2 weeks to bottle condition. If nothing else, is a good excuse to buy good beer. Plus, it’s DC beer week. I wish I’d snuck home a bottle of Ommegang 3 philosophers from last night. It would probably never make it to a hiding location though!

Beer ‘skunking’ is typically more a product of exposure to light than heat – but agreed drinking a warm beer is awful, skunked or not.
You could require that all cached beers are placed in a stream to keep cool-ish.
Or just go with Mikey’s idea, which is much better anyways

Or we could start in the fall. Or augment Freezing Saddles II.

Fun Fact, They don’t have skunks in Europe, so if you tell someone from Holland that their Heineken skunky, he would have no idea what you are talking about.

I hear an opportunity to promote upstate New York ice wines!

That’s unpossible. This guy’s from France.

I stopped geocaching because the reward just wasn’t there for me any more. This however could be rewarding!

There’s more ways you can ruin a beer than skunking
High temps will tend to accelerate aging–whether this matters depends on how long you leave it there and what style it is. But, yes, if nothing else make sure it’s light-proof.

ParticipantTwo winters ago, Spokes Etc hid gift cards along the trails. I thought that was kinda cool.
