I saw this on the front page of the NY Post while at the grocery store yesterday.

It sounds like these rich old bags are getting their way. Well that’s fine I guess. Leave them to their stupid limos. Put the bike share stations were people actually want them. I don’t think CaBi will be seen in Mclean or Potomac anytime soon either.

Sometimes not everyone in an area agrees on bike share. I find this opposition to the current “holy hole in North Brooklyn” particularly heartening.

The best part was the “Related: Naked Bike Ride on Saturday” link in the middle of an article about Hasidim Jews loving bikes.

McLean just celebrated the installation of wayfinding signs for cyclists. http://fabb-bikes.blogspot.com/2013/05/new-bike-signage-in-mclean.html There is a core group of dedicated bike advocates working to improve cycling routes in McLean. It’s not easy to bike through there. The speed limits are fast, the roads tend to be narrow. Someone was seriously injured along Lewinsville Road just last week, a road with bike lanes. With the new Metro line opening soon, demand for CaBi will increase all along the Tysons corridor.

There’s a group of moms who bike (mostly training, but definite interest in family/transportational cycling). It’s theoretically based in Vienna, but covers NoVa and there are a number of McLean mom’s on it. They would support better bike infrastructure in the area. There’s been lots of talk of how the trails just aren’t adequate for anyone.

The question is how to get people with limited time into advocacy…

Does everyone remember the infamous Lincoln Park bikeshare meeting? The one resurrected in the wake of Citibike?

Last year we moved onto the block and directly in front of where the racks were supposed to go. Having not made the connection, I really stepped in it with the neighbors my first week. I’d just ridden home and met my wife in the front yard chatting with some new faces. They asked if I always rode and if we were CaBi members. I replied that we were and that it was too bad we didn’t also have racks on our side of the park. There was nervous laughter and an acknowledgement that we almost did. Turns out two sets of these particular neighbors had been on opposite sides of the debate.

My favorite bit, and a good post-script for the whole imbroglio: One of the families that was fiercely opposed to the location of the station are now pretty frequent users.

Oh yeah1 I noticed these when they were installed not too long ago. They’re nice but it’ll be when we hit a more critical mass of cyclists in McLean. I’ve definitely noticed an increase over the past 5 years or so but it doesn’t surprise me to hear about the Lewinsville mishap. I’ve contemplated riding up that way many times (my kid’s preschool is that direction; and also think I could maybe get to the W&OD, Tysons or CCT that way) but never dared yet. Just a few too many narrow, fast, twisty, hilly sections for SUV-minivans and cyclists to be sharing.
