ParticipantOr, to use a nautical term, tacking. My commute is due south into Alexandria. With the wind eventually mostly at my back once I get on the MVT, I’m thinking of throwing up a spinnaker and coasting home.

ParticipantWell, this afternoon’s wind should make a Hains Point loop alternatively exhilarating and terrifying.

ParticipantAccording to weather underground’s map, the wind is currently blowing in every direction for my ride home. I’m assuming this will result in a constant headwind but never a tailwind.

ParticipantWaiting at the stoplight at glebe & fairfax in ballston, my car was rocking in the wind gusts. Best of luck to all my mary poppins-like cyclist friends.

Maybe a sailing kite would be easier to rig?

ParticipantArlington crew was out starting to clean this up when I rolled by five minutes behind Cyndi.

ParticipantI rode out to Herndon and back on the W&OD this afternoon and there were no ice issues from the Custis junction out to Green Lizard. However, there were several places with water on the trail that was starting to freeze over on the ride back home as the temperature was rapidly dropping, so watch out in the morning. Luckily none of them are very big.

Ugh. It’s still there, but only blocking half the trail. With the volume of trail users and the placement of the tree (on a downhill after a turn), this could cause problems. I’ll report it.

I thought it odd that they’d leave one half of the trail obstructed. Would’ve taken a minute or 2 with chain saw to finish.

Yeah, I’m not impressed.

ParticipantMVT (from Crystal City connector to the 14th St. Bridge) and 14th St. Bridge are clear. Even most of the Canada geese droppings have washed away (but there are still faded green blotches on the asphalt).

Clear with the exception of this spot on the MVT where the big puddles collect (and freeze when it gets cold). The patch of ice there is small and easy enough to ride over (at least today it was), but isn’t there anything that the NPS can do to improve drainage at this spot so that this doesn’t happen? There’s anything from a puddle to the sixth Great Lake if there’s anything more than the most gentle of mists. Or do they actively want puddles to collect there since it’s a multi-use path and toddlers want the opportunity to “splash puddle” (as my son would say) and ice skaters want a temporary 20’x10′ rink?
