Anyone want to guess at what trail conditions will be like on Monday morning? The winner gets… a free ELITE vote. Very valuable.

Arlington will be dry, everything else will be a continuous sheet of ice.

I was planning on running inside, securing the bribes and then heading back out to do laps around the block. Because I’ll likely have no clue how to get to where I’m going from wherever we stop.

Hains Point was closed this morning and covered with ice and snow along various stretches. So definitely DO NOT go around the gate and through the snow with your stupid slick 23s and do a lap. DO. NOT.

Just want to say a big thanks to Arlington County for plowing the Eads Street Bike lanes. I rode through there last night and it was great to have a snow free ride all the way. Very much appreciated. It’s safer riding the bike lane than some of the side streets that are quite narrow now due to the piled up snow.

My thanks too! I’ve been riding between Shirlington and the Pentagon City metro station the past couple of days and have really enjoyed using the snow and ice free Eads and Hayes Street bike lanes. Thanks too to Arlington DES for cleaning up the snow from where Eads connects to the Four Mile Run trail.

Four Mile Run Trail along Glebe Rd.

There are now a couple of patches of hard ice that extend for about 8-10 feet almost all the way across the trail on the part of FMR that runs alongside Glebe Rd. (the section I call Crepe Myrtle Lane). While it’s now possible to very carefully weave through them, new snow will make them impossible to see shortly. Studs and or great caution advised.

Do not ride in DC today. Poor visibility plus weekend drivers means even the sidewalks aren’t safe. There should be a special driving test that you have to take before driving in snow. One woman waved me around her as I was CaBi-ing home because “she wouldn’t be responsible if something happened”. I neglected to mention that she seems to be a little confused about how responsibility works, but I figured it wouldn’t have been productive.

The ice mounds where drivers cleared their cars after the last snow, which are now hidden under fresh snow, make for a fun little surprise obstacle course.

Yeah definitely a “what lies beneath” sort of day out there now. Even with studs, 4+ inches of unplowed snow is going to be hard to ride on, and partly-packed layers snow over ice makes it tough too – I was fishtailing constantly, but it was a good exercise in bike handling.

Studded fat bike tires maybe? I think Dirt has a bike with those.

All the motorists I encountered were good but definitely saw a significant number with traction issues. I was mostly just surprised to see as many vehicles out there as I did.

The WOD east of the Custis junction is impassable without perhaps a fatbike – the snow’s all wet and sticky, and stopped me dead almost immediately.

The Custis itself, however, with appropriately tubby tires, is buckets of fun.

Ice now falling in Columbia Heights, DC. Be safe out there. Freezing Saddles is great, but I’d prefer everyone be alive for the celebratory happy hour.
