ParticipantSherman Ave NW: only room for cars
11th St NW: Bike lane unusable
Q St NW: Not only was the bike lane unusable, but the main traffic lane wasn’t fully cleared
7th St NW: Oh, look, the snow emergency route is dry pavement curb to curb. Imagine that.February 18, 2015 at 3:34 pm #1023376PotomacCyclist
ParticipantMore snow on the way this afternoon/evening. Not as much as on Mon./Tue. Possibly 1 inch, 2 inches to the north of D.C.

ParticipantAs said, the MoCo portion of the Capital Crescent was clear pavement. The D.C. had been plowed but was still thin packed snow. Not a problem on studded 2in MTB tires but would be dicey on slicks (for me anyway).
I also came across the NPS clearing the tree that fell over the weekend. I choose to go around their barricade instead of going up to the tow path and got a stern talking to from a ranger. Still better than the detour on the thick rutted ice of the tow path.

And here’s the full CCT video in 8x speed.

You may note that entire stretch without seeing another person on a bike (we don’t use the “C” word anymore, right?)

ParticipantI only wish the drivers were well behaved this morning. Since my direct route to Shirlington for HDCC is the uncleared W&OD, I took a roundabout route that added and extra mile and a half each way. Way too many cars running (not just rolling) stop signs, failing to come to any semblance of a stop before turning right on red (or turning right on red ignoring the sign that says “No Right Turn on RED) and one particularly egregious driver (red Mazda sedan with VA plates JGK 7860) on the 4MR Dr lateral between Columbia Pike and George Mason who just had to pass me crossing the double yellow and forcing the oncoming car to come to a complete stop to avoid the inevitable head on collision.
On the Custis, anywhere there has been mostly shade, there is a thin layer of snow slush and the rolling hills stretch from the east end of the Sprout Run overpass east to the Lee Highway junction is the worst. Be extra careful on the moguls between the Bridge to Nowhere and the Veitch St access trail. I’m not sure why they couldn’t have cleared the Veitch St access trail since they drove on it anyway. The Lincoln St access trails and the Quincy access trail are now cleared.
On the W&OD heading east from the Custis junction, there is now double track from a truck having driven on the trail (sometime between 7 and 9 am). I didn’t try to ride in those track though.

ParticipantHas anyone tried to ride the 14th street bridge this AM? Just wondering whether to go exploring the remnants of the MVT this afternoon…

ParticipantAny updates on Key or Memorial Bridges?

ParticipantI road pentagon to buzzard point. check out my strava ride for photos:
14th street bridge is an icy slushy rutted mess. About 4-6 inches of frozen mess with plow debris. I walked most of the bridge, and road only about 3 – 100 foot sections. The VA side is bad, snowy rutted, icy slushy, the DC side was cleared from the hidden steps down to TJ, and around East Basin Drive.

The west sidewalk on the Key was shoveled and clear. I don’t know about the east side, but it was probably similar.

The east sidewalk of Key Bridge was in good shape this morning — fine on slicks.
Does anyone have surveillance updates on MVT and the WOD? Still an icy/snowy/slushy mess? I was planning to take them this evening, but perhaps I need to find an alternate route.
Thanks!!

Based on what the MVT was like yesterday afternoon and pics I’ve seen today, it’s a no go, especially on slicks. I was on 38c knobbies with studs and turned back yesterday after 100 yards or so. Pretty much fat bikes only for a bit I’m afraid. Here’s a #bafs2015 Instagram where you can see the conditions on the humpback bridge this morning… http://instagram.com/p/zPnlZEnsSn/

I “rode” the bridge this morning. An examination of my Strava track for that ride will note that I climbed the ramp up on the VA side without pedaling (cadence = 0) and made it all the way across the same way. Lest you think I had an ebike or some hi-tech device, walkage occured.
bike/ped path on the bridge was uncleared – I called DC 311 and the operator said she would call DDOT.
I’m hoping for pavement on my ride home.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. Sorry. Anyway. DDOT knows the bridge is a mess. I think their plan to deal with it doesn’t extend beyond answering dasgeh’s questions on Twitter.

If by “answer” you mean this one from @ddotdc:
Quote:@dasgeh @bikepedantic @DCDPW I’ll also bringing in @311DCgov but you have both agencies that deal with the clean up.February 18, 2015 at 6:48 pm #1023425Mikey
Participantmore like “suckage occurred”
If they would Velcro a snow shovel to the lamp post near the start of the bridge, I’d be happy to clear 50 feet of it. Together we could make it work. I’m ready to sign up for Capital Shovelshare.

Memorial has been good! MVT is still a mess, but the trail along 110 between Iwo Jima and Memorial Bridge is clear.
Memorial Bridge yesterday morning
Heading toward Arlington National Cemetery
Trail along Rt. 110All of those were taken between 9 and 10am yesterday, so a lot of clearing has happened since.
