    Speaking of which….

Anyone interested in intervals at Hains Point tonight around 4:15 or so?

The weather yesterday was so nice, auto traffic was backed up at a standstill for about five blocks near the W&OD crossing of Shreve Rd. Great day to be on a trail, bad day to be stuck in gridlock on a county road!

I’m enjoying all the year-round bike commuters on Twitter gently poking fun at the fair-weather cyclists who made it out today.

Can’t. Gotta finish up wheel build so that I’m ready for Sunday’s death march through Fairfax County.

I can only imagine how many fair-weather folk will be out tonight. I have a pretty extreme fear of swarms so hopefully not too many. I’ve always wondered why they haven’t posted any “No walking four abreast with strollers” signs along the W&OD encountered it twice last night!

While it is easy to get annoyed with the sudden popularity of our MUPs on fine spring like days, I have decided to follow ACC’s example and think, “What would Dirt do?” Since I won’t sing to them, I will give a pleasant ding from my bell and a smile and remember that at least they are out getting some exercise and won’t run me over with their car on this encounter. ;)

It was lovely weather indeed. I really really need to get a bell. Crossing Key bridge on a bike involves a lot of “on your left”s. I should probably find a better route home actually.

I was at Hains Point around 5. I did do some extended cruise intervals (20 min. at Zone 3, in between moderate effort and threshold effort), but on the mountain bike. Even if I’m riding hard on that thing, there’s no way I’m going to keep up with anyone on a road or tri bike. At least I realize this going in, so the fact that everyone zoomed past me didn’t bother me.

Even though we haven’t had much snow at all, there is still some grit and road salt on various roads and trails so I’ll stay on the MTB until late March.

It was nice to ride without having to bundle up with neoprene bike shoe covers, chemical toe warmers, tights, a windbreaker jacket or a beanie (that covers the ears) for once. But I forgot how much I dislike riding on the Mt. Vernon Trail during bike rush hour. While it’s neat to see all the cyclists and runners out there, I don’t like encountering the Cat6 guys or the faster guys who are intent on doing a speed workout on the MVT. They don’t stop for anything, and pass in between bike traffic on both sides, forcing people to move to the edge of the trail on both sides. MVT is great in non-peak hours, but not at the peak hour.

I think everyone was at Hains around 5 yesterday. I was just wearing normal clothes and on my commuter but I just didn’t want to go home yet.

I couldn’t agree with the MVT stuff more.

It was really great to see so many fair-weather types out there in Fairfax County yesterday. I saw no fewer than 3 old three speeds out on the trail as well as more cruisers than usual. Someone was even trying out the old bottle generator lights as the sun was going down (yellow-ish pulsing incandescent light about 4 inches in diameter.. love it). These are bikes not typically seen on the W&OD on weekdays out my way. You go-fast types may grumble about the crowds closer to the city, but I’m happy to see more two-wheelers out and about. More people toting shopping bags on cruisers means more people using bicycles as transportation, and that can only be a good thing.
