ParticipantThere are multiple area cycling groups on Meetup.com.

ParticipantFor Arlington: I’ve been on the Revolution Clarendon Hill Rides quite a few times (last year). When the sun is out late (in mid-summer, I guess), those are some tough workouts. Contes does a similar ride, I think.
For DC: sounds like Bicyclespace is filling up its calendar already, but I haven’t been on their rides yet.March 29, 2011 at 7:55 pm #925435Mark Blacknell
ParticipantThanks, all. CR – I used to connect through Meetup for some MTB rides, but that sort of fell apart last year. Brendan – the Conte’s ride attracts a serious A group, and a very broadly defined B group. Good times for all. I’ll try to connect with a Rev Cycles ride this year.
Also, for anyone interested, my article is up.

Thanks Mark!
And I can’t believe I blanked on a few other less-regularly-scheduled DC-area options which aren’t too far for Arlington folks who don’t mind braving the Rosslyn hill from time to time (or can metro their bike during non-peak hours):
1. The facebook group Chain Gang DC ( https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=71926827296 ) tends to do a loop ride every other week or so, eight months out of the year. Mostly social rides (10-20 miles), with some longer weekend ones (40 or so). They introduced me to my first century, the seagull century, in 2009. Full disclosure: I’m now an admin, which means I’ll be stressing out about ride scheduling this year.
2. WABA ( http://www.waba.org ) puts together events from time to time, more on a yearly schedule: 50 states ride, VASA ride, Lincoln ride, etc.
3. The Bike House in DC ( http://thebikehouse.org/ and https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Bike-House/104312173340 ) does a few ad hoc ones from time to time. This years “Coldest Day” ride was a hoot: http://thebrightwoodian.blogspot.com/2011/01/bike-house-folks-brave-coldest-day-of.html
4. Some friends organize a monthly Mt. Pleasant Cruiser Ride ( http://mtpleasantcruiserride.blogspot.com/ ) which is usually a short tour of parts of NW with some really chill folks.
For all rides, assume helmets are required and if they might run into the night, headlight and a rear-flashing red light.
