Sandals are fun in the rain. I don’t like riding in the rain but at least my feet are smiling.

I was really wishing for sandals today. There was an inch of water in my shoes when I got home!

Be careful of buying too many baby wipes at one time since they will dry out over time even if unopened.

On a semi-related post, if baby wipes ever dry out, you can nicely replace their moisture, with 1 part aloe gel, 1 part castile liquid soap, to about 10 parts water, then add a few drops of tea tree oil and shake vigorously. This in a sprayer will make everything feel nice and clean. We used to make this up and use it with squares of scrap flannel as our own green alternative to baby wipes when the kids were in diapers. You can also spray on a paper towel and use as a wipe. For more disinfecting purposes you can add a squirt of purel to the mix.

The Hains Point “sprinklers” are more like high-powered water jets. You need body armor (or a sturdy helmet) to protect your head.

The Potomac River is muddy but it’s relatively clean (except after heavy rainstorms, when the storm sewers overflow and mix with the sanitary sewers). I’ve done several triathlon race swims in the river and no glowing skin or new appendages yet. I’ve even (accidentally) gulped down some of the water during those races. But I wouldn’t recommend guzzling Potomac River water. Not very tasty.

I swam in the potomac once – just north of the 3 sisters, but from a boat. It didn’t feel that dirty, but the curent can be pretty strong, I would not swim from the shore anywhere north of roosevelt bridge (too fast moving) or anywhere south of there the 14th – due to sewange and other runnoff. I guess it mostly depends on how fast moving and how much rain we have had.

It’s actually what I don’t use that makes the difference for me. I skip sun glasses (if it’s possible) as I find my face gets really sweaty without air flow. I also skip gloves for rides under 50 miles, and I skip the drink supplements for my daily commute so I can dump water on my head if I need too. I do like my Craft summer base layer which amazingly helps keep me cooler (seems counter-intuitive) but it works for me.

I read “Craft summer base layer” as “Craft Sumer Beer”. My way would work well too.
