In my fairly limited experience, it seems like the walk signal will come without the beg button during “business hours”, but if it’s late enough, e.g. 7pm, it seems that it won’t come on (and then I typically cross Fairfax without the signal when traffic on Glebe gets the green).

Thanks. Yes, it was late and it didn’t come with the green. Had to do a late night run of stuff for someone admitted to VHC from ER, which took about 6 hours. I think I was also violating a rule by being on Custis at that time since shockingly I use my bike for transportation and not just pleasure.

    Alternatives: 1) Cross at Wakefield
    2) Cross half of Glebe and turn left onto Fairfax from the left turn lane.

I believe Custis is open 24 hours, may be the only trail in the area that “technically” is.

The ped signal should come on 24/7. There’s no reason for it not to come on with the green.

Please write des@arlingtonva.us to report the issue.

Sure there is–when you create a ginormous road, it’s annoying for drivers to have to wait the amount of time it takes someone to cross it.

Another alternative which avoids the wrong-side problem entirely:
Exit Custis onto 10th St near N Edison, right onto George Mason to cross 66, immediate left onto the 4800 block of Fairfax, then follow the sidewalk over to the Holiday Inn.

This one obviously requires some comfort with vehicular cycling. And rear visibility is poor after you pass the high point of the bridge. However the portion on George Mason is so short that you can time it so that you won’t get passed by any thru-drivers before reaching the turn lane. I reach the left turn lane before drivers who had been north of the 11th St crosswalk at the time of my right turn.
