I can only imagine the soul crushing despair when at mile 120 you hit this corner for the second time:

Because right after it’s 10% for almost 6 miles. Here’s me and 5 minutes of pain. You can see at 1:18 where I wish I had an 11 speed.

ParticipantMy heart hurts just thinking about that.

ParticipantStrava has a November “Everest” challenge up from November 8-27: http://www.strava.com/challenges/strava-climbing-challenge-02
I figure I’ll just ride as I can (which is not very uphill on a daily basis) between the 8th and the 26th, see how much I have left to do on Thanksgiving (the 27th), and then get up early on the 27th and do as much as possible. Maybe a Kilimanjaro at best or maybe a Whiteface Mountain at worst!
I’ll probably ride a combination of Research Road repeats and loops like this: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6418748 to stretch out the legs and keep it interesting.
Research Road will be closed to traffic on Thanksgiving, and there won’t be anybody out on the Ag Center roads either, so if the weather’s good a pretty good day for a difficult challenge. Plus I have to work with Laurie on Friday, so that’ll be a good recovery day. And turkey and stuffing is excellent power food.
PS. If you’re into steep, a Lastner Lane extension provides a short but nasty one: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6418787

ParticipantWow, the idea is crazy cool. You all have fun with it… I’ll be the guy at the top of the hill, in a chair, with a beer, calling allez! Allez!

ParticipantYeah I think I would try McKinleying first, or maybe just Whitneying (highest peak in contiguous US). Single climb repeats for that long just aren’t that much fun.

ParticipantSometimes I go Jay Millering. Do it once and go home feeling real proud of myself.

To be thorough, I think I’d start with the highest point in each state…. You could do representative climbs, kinda like the spreadsheet below. It would be easy at first, but would ramp up quickly! By the 7th state (Illinois) you’re up to 1200 ft. already, which exceeds most individual segments around here, forcing you to go to the mountains or do local repeats.

This sounds like a twisted version of the 50 States Ride.

ParticipantOK, here’s where I stand on the Strava Everest challenge: 9200 feet to go in four days (the challenge ends on Thanksgiving). Tomorrow and Tuesday I’ll commute and get maybe 900 feet per day, so down to about 7400. But Wednesday looks like a washout, so I’ll probably work from home and not ride. So the full 7400 to do on Thanksgiving. I figure if I get the turkey in the oven by about 10am, ride from then until noon (maybe 3k), take an hour break for lunch and dry clothes, ride from 1 to about 3pm (maybe another 3k), get a shower and eat. It’s a 15.5 pound turkey, stuffed, so figuring in the curvature of the earth and the phase of the moon, probably dinner at 4pm. Then go back out after dinner for a hour to finish?
It’s unlikely but possible. Even unlikelier if it snows Wednesday night — hill repeats on an unplowed road on a single speed mountain bike sound fun in theory, but not 7k worth I don’t think. Then again, Friday will be a rest day…

ParticipantI saw they added something from Roleur for the challenge finishers. Had I known that I might have tried to repeat the Rapha challenge climbing I did; I’ve got enough Strava jerseys now.

Participantrelated bad joke:
A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel attached to his belt buckle. Bartender asks, “Why on earth do you have steering wheel on your belt buckle?”
Pirate responds, “Yarrrrgh – It’s drivin’ me nuts!”
