I have a few locations in mind, I’m thinking one in MD, PA, and VA. I have several places that would actually work. I know this has been discussed prior but that thread got tooo long…

I’m happy to organize this and make it “official” so we all get some actual “credit”

My thoughts, Bike Arlington has lots of Crazy Riders that LOVE hills so Yeah, this is a must! Mid September early October, days are long enough and the sun will be lower in the sky (more shade). This could be a pipe dream but I plan to smoke it!!! It would obviously be MORE fun with a good sized group. With the intention, no one leaves till everyone is done or DONE…

No MD/PA/VA/WVA everesting attempts yet. We need to put these hills on the map, Any Interest???

I think max grade needs to be less than 8-10%, otherwise, it’s just too steep for that type of ride. 5-8% I can do all day (or at least I have for 5-6 hours) without burning matches, but even short stretches of 10-12% eat up the reserves really quickly, and kill your average speed.

Just go to Everest to do it. That’s what fat bikes are for.

While mathemagically this works. When I plot out any real climb it just doesn’t do that. Some of the hills I was plotting proved to take almost 350 miles to get there. That’s too much, and while yes an easier climb at average 5% nothing easy about 350 miles. Steep climbs are taxing, agree, but they get the job done!

How do you carry your supplemental oxygen: backpack or pannier?

For me, I think I’d rather ride 300 miles with 150 miles of climbing. I don’t know because I’ve never ridden more than 200 in a 24hr period and the most climbing was 11,000. So one and a half times my longest ride and almost three times as much climbing. Yes it’s probably not possible for me. I would take the whole 24hr and then there is getting to and from the mountain. Mar Lu Road is 2.1 miles long, 412ft, max grade 6%. 70 laps, that is a lot but because I can’t climb very good… frequent breaks from the climbing should be helpful. The 4.2 mile lap would need to be completed in 20 minutes, so climb up three times per hour for 24 hours. How are the conditions of this road? I assume it’s not heavily travelled. I may look into it.

Well marlu does have the services at the bottom so that’s good. Lost river came from a friend. I haven’t ridden it but its basically the only 2000′ climb around. Later this year I’m doing a ride that packs it in both directions. I’ve heard great things about the climb, one being its in the shade. All the others I’ve done. Big flat would be perfect as well as 77 but would put the ride into the 250+ mile category.

I think marlu is too short and would be like doing intervals. Also the decent is all breaks no fun. If I gotta ride the same decent all day I’m trying to be breaking 45 and having a good time.

I’m not entirely opposed to a 300 mile Everest, I just don’t think its as cool.

All in all, I’m very serious about doing this, no games. Thinking about my birthday on October 3rd! What better way to celebrate.

You haven’t ridden Mar-Lu Road nor have I. It starts at the top of the climb we’ve done. Where we crest the ridge is the bottom of Mar-Lu Rd. Judging from the map, it’s very straight, no switchbacks or even curves so sight lines should be good. It’s nowhere near as steep as the road we take to get over the Mar-Lu ridge. I don’t know. I never rode it. It’s kinda flat. I like that. And short! I like that. If we could get the camp at the top to let us use the toilets, bring everything else we need. That would be several gallons of water and some food. Yes it would be very much like intervals. It would totally suck! Never mind. I cannot climb that much anyway!

Oh yeah that part, never done that. Rod in sure you could do this. There may be some reluctance to start, followed by an Um, followed by “can we add gravel”, followed by me “sure why not make it harder”. You sir have True Grit! I’m confident if you started you wouldn’t quit, you just might have to take Monday off work:).

The Thunder Ridge climb on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Big Island on the James River goes from 700 feet to about 3900 feet over just about 13 miles. Never gets above 8% and averages probably about 6%. Nothing at the top, but at the bottom there’s a parking area/bathroom, or you could go east on 501 for less than a mile to get to a gas station and restaurant.

It’s about 15 miles away from my home in Lexington as well, if anybody needs a place to camp (only have one spare bed.)

During the Rapha Rising Strava Challenge a couple of years ago, I climbed Thunder Ridge twice and up to House Mountain (North on the BRP) in once day. That was probably the dumbest idea I had ever had. It was about 9,500 feet over 70ish miles. It was that moment that I decided I was never doing another Strava climbing challenge ever again. But I got that stupid patch. 😎

My only memories of Big Island are that it smelled terrible. The paper plant did the air there no favors.

Clearly you are not! Everestanesia has already sunk in and I have a new segment for you:).
